Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU’s Safety and Risk Management team has an exciting opportunity for a Hazardous Waste Technician!

The Hazardous Waste Technician must provide excellent customer service to our research, hospital, and educational customers in order to foster a culture of safety by helping to manage the hazardous waste program for the university and VCU Health System.

In addition, the Hazardous Waste Technician will be a liaison and will be responsible for interacting with the Richmond Fire Department and VCU Police Department, and will be involved in the overall emergency response management program for VCU and VCU Health Systems.

Finally, the Hazardous Waste Technician will assist in the overall laboratory safety program to help achieve a positive safety culture and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as other applicable industry standards including EPA, OSHA, VDEQ, VOSH, and NFPA .

Minimum Hiring Standards

High School Diploma or GED required. An equivalent combination of training, experience and knowledge indicating skills and abilities may substitute for education and experience.

Ability to perform hazardous waste characterization, pick-ups, bulking and lab packing.

Ability to inspect and assess satellite accumulation areas for RCRA compliance and chemical safety.

Ability to maintain a small and large quantity of hazardous waste storage facilities as per RCRA regulations.

Ability to respond to hazardous chemical spill emergencies at a Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Technician level with the ability to respond to emergencies after hours and to be a liaison with the VCU Police Department and the Richmond Fire Department.

Ability to wear respiratory protection and PPE up to SCBA level for emergency response (Level A in the OSHA HAZWOPER standard).

Ability to anticipate, recognize, and implement appropriate Respiratory Fit testing techniques in regards to hazardous waste and radioactive waste.

Ability to rely on independent decision making and use own discretion in accepting, processing and disposing of hazardous waste and radioactive waste.

Ability to inspect and segregate radioactive waste for appropriate disposal by licensed vendor or into decay-in-storage for eventual disposal at VCU .

Ability to maintain decay-in-storage facilities and operations according to established procedures.

Ability to complete basic contamination control surveys with handheld survey meter and Liquid Scintillation Counter for rad contamination under the supervision of RSO .

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a variety of customers on complex issues regarding hazardous waste, satellite accumulation areas and regulatory requirements.

Experience in hazardous waste management and industrial hygiene.

Ability to achieve DOT, and IATA training for Radioactive Materials.

Valid Virginia driver’s license or the ability to obtain one is required along with a good driving record.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

Prefer at a minimum BS in chemistry, industrial hygiene, safety, engineering, or a closely related field and/or a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the field.

Prefer certification by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager ( CHMM ).

Required Licenses/ Certifications

HAZWOPER Certification, RCRA Training, DOT Hazardous Waste Shipment Training or ability to receive these certifications and training.
