Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
Directs and administers all aspects of UVU's Academic Standards program in coordination with the Academic Standards Committee and under the direction of the designated administrator. The Director also maintains a case load advising students experiencing academic difficulty regarding college policies, procedures, and options available to assist them in reaching their academic goals and return or maintain Good Academic Standing. Emphasis is placed on helping the student find academic success and encouraging retention. Duties may include coaching and mentoring students, explaining policies, making referrals, maintaining records, interpreting career/interest and personality assessments, dealing with a variety of academic standards issues, developing and facilitating academic workshops, and coordinating with faculty, staff, and other departments on campus.
  • Assists student in determining their reasons for experiencing academic difficulty and counsel them on how to overcome barriers. Refers students to appropriate services as needed. Implements strategies and resources to support student achievement and retention.
  • Establishes an effective collaborative relationship with student services, academic departments and other external entities to insure that the program is administered effectively and appropriately across campus.
  • Regularly collects and monitors data to assess program effectiveness to advance the strategic initiatives of the department. Conducts, gathers, and disseminates research regarding academic success and failure with interested parties across campus and cooperates with other campus entities.
  • Supervises the management of all Academic Standards personnel and fiscal resources. Administers duties related to the Academic Standards Policies.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline AND three years of staff level experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the summary of duties totaling seven years.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience advising/counseling students who have experienced academic difficulty.
  • Knowledge of academic standards policies, support resources, and research in the area of academic support.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to administer and interpret MBTI, STRONG, STRENGTHS and other tests and assessments.
  • Experience in coaching, teaching, and training.
  • Knowledge and experience with theory and practice related to adult learning, study strategies, learning disabilities, advising, counseling, student development, motivation and their impact on learning.
  • Experience managing a budget and practicing effective and ethical financial management.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Skill in leadership, supervision, and conflict management.
  • Strong skills in the use of computers, Microsoft Word and Excel programs, email, academic and office software platforms (BANNER) as applied to management of student records, report preparation, and related activities.
  • Ability to coordinate with faculty and administrators in higher education to successfully administer the Academic Standards program.
  • Ability to gather data regarding student academic standing, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to creatively and independently problem solve by prioritizing, organizing, and multitasking during peak times while maintaining flexibility to address urgent concerns.
  • Ability to respectively serve and appreciate individuals with diverse personalities and backgrounds.


Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a masters degree in Counseling and Guidance, Educational Psychology, Behavioral Science, Students Development, Education, or a closely related field AND three years of increasingly responsible experience related to the summary of duties.

General office environment.
