Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. Position Description: Reporting to the department chair, the Assistant Professor of Statistics position requires teaching, research, and service responsibilities and an earned doctorate in statistics, or mathematics with an emphasis in statistics or data science. The position centers on strengthening the department's undergraduate program and expanding the graduate program offerings through teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, producing high quality scholarship, supervising master's theses in the statistics concentration, and performing institutional and professional service. The department offers a B.S. in Mathematical Sciences, minor in Mathematical Sciences, minor in Statistics, Actuarial Sciences Certificate, M.S. in Mathematical Sciences (with possibility of concentrating in statistics), and Applied Statistics Graduate Certificate. This position will support each of those programs as well as potentially contribute to the delivery of the Quantitative Analysis component of an Environmental Science Ph.D. program that is under review.
The position is a 9-month tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The standard workload for a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences is 60% teaching, 30% scholarship and 10% service.
• Earned doctorate in statistics, mathematics with an emphasis in statistics, or a closely related field with a primary statistical component, by August 1, 2021. The degree must contain at least 18 graduate semester hours in statistics.
• Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level.
• Demonstrated evidence of commitment to a sustained research program.
• Demonstrated evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
• Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
• Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
• Demonstrated expertise in actuarial science (such as passing professional exams).
• Demonstrated expertise in machine learning or data science using modern programming languages.
• Experience with directing graduate or undergraduate research.
