McMaster University’s Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the Gilbrea Chair in Aging and Mental Health. The successful candidate will have a track record of research, teaching and service commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The incumbent will be appointed at the appropriate rank with tenure in the Department of Health, Aging & Society, located on the main university campus to begin on July 1, 2021, and named to the Gilbrea Chair for an initial 5-year period, with the possibility of renewal upon successful review.
Applicants must have an area of specialization in critical social science research on aging and mental health. The Chair will be expected to bring a robust program of internationally-recognized, innovative research in their area of their specialization and engage in interdisciplinary research and other scholarship activities related to aging and mental health at McMaster. The Faculty of Social Sciences and the University have significant strengths in aging research, reflected by the presence of the Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging, the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA), and the headquarters of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).
The successful applicant must have a PhD in a relevant social science discipline and must also demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching and research. They should demonstrate a willingness and ability to contribute to the department’s collegial and collaborative intellectual community as well as university-wide inclusive excellence goals and priorities. Research excellence will be reflected in successful mentoring of graduate students and particularly doctoral students, extramural grant acquisition, publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals and other research outputs with societal or community impact. The successful applicant will teach both undergraduate and graduate level courses and have a demonstrated track record of excellent teaching. They will also be expected to foster existing collaborations and initiate new ones within their department and with other departments and faculties.
