Concord Academy, an independent college preparatory school for grades 9 through 12 located in Concord, Massachusetts, has a teaching opening in its English Department for the spring semester (January 25, 2021-June 11, 2021). The position will be half- to full- time, with courses distributed across three modular terms within the spring semester.

Founded in 1922, Concord Academy is a renowned independent high school for individuals who go on to make their mark on the world. In a caring and challenging atmosphere, students thrive in partnership with talented educators, encouraged to find their voices and discover and develop talents as scholars, artists, musicians, and athletes. With approximately 400 boarding and day students, the CA community is vibrant, close-knit, and enlivened by a rigorous curriculum with wide-as-you-can-dream opportunities. This is a place where students love to learn, where creativity and trust are abundant natural resources, and where the history and literature of New England enrich us every day.

The school seeks to appoint an experienced teacher in support of a strong and well-established English program. The successful candidate will value and seek out opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and engage with a diverse community. They will bring a creative and innovative interest to curriculum design and experimentation and a keen commitment to their own development as a teacher. We are looking for candidates with genuine enthusiasm for working with adolescents, curiosity about learning, and commitment to professional and personal growth. The ideal candidate embraces a discussion-based approach to learning, encourages students as they grapple with challenging questions and readings, fosters interpretation and communication skills, and facilitates the development of an informed, analytical, and persuasive writing style.

The courses to be covered are:

  • January 28-March 5:
    • 11th/12th grade elective on utopian and dystopian literature (part A, 1 section)
  • March 22-April 28:
    • 9th grade English (Part A, 1 section)
    • 9th grade English (Part B, 1 section)
    • 11th/12th grade elective on the sequential narrative form of comics (part A, 1 section)
  • May 4-June 9:
    • 11th/12th grade elective on utopian and dystopian literature (part B, 1 section)
    • 9th grade English (Part B, 1 section)*
    • 11th/12th grade elective on the sequential narrative form of comics (part B, 2 sections)*

*These courses may or may not require coverage—to be determined based on leave.

Concord Academy anticipates operating under a Hyflex, hybrid plan with in-person and remote learners throughout the spring semester. Candidates able to teach in-person will be prioritized, but those who wish to teach remotely will be considered as well. Candidates should be comfortable with technology and able to adapt to the changing conditions that the second semester will likely bring. Training will be provided for the HyFlex classroom setup as well as for our learning management system (Schoology) and online core tools. While this position is advertised to cover all of the courses listed above, we also invite applications from those who are interested in a part-time role or those who have expertise specific to any of the listed courses.

We actively seek applicants who reflect and support our mission-driven commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive school community. The school provides a competitive benefits package, and salary is commensurate with experience.

Interested candidates are asked to send a cover letter, transcripts, and resume to:
