Job Summary

The University of Southern Mississippi seeks a visionary leader and accomplished artist and/or scholar to serve as the twelve-month, full-time Director of the School of Music beginning July 1, 2021.  Review of applications will begin January 15, 2021, and will continue until the position is filled.  The director will administer a music school that has a longstanding reputation for excellence and is widely recognized as one of the finest in the Southeast.  With six staff and thirty-nine full-time faculty members, the School offers three undergraduate (B.A., B.M., and B.M.Ed.) and three graduate degrees (M.M., M.M.Ed., D.M.A.) to more than 400 students.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director will foster an inclusive, collegial, and aspirational environment to recruit, engage, and retain faculty, staff, and students of distinction; prioritize efforts to seek internal and external funding and to engage in development activities; demonstrate a strong commitment to shared governance and transparency; work collaboratively with faculty and staff to articulate a vision for the School and to strengthen and develop programs to meet the needs of twenty-first-century students; support and advocate for national and international student recruitment; oversee program assessment and School accreditation; be available  to faculty, staff, and students most hours of the standard business week; teach courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise that meet the curricular needs; manage budgets and allocate resources; foster positive community and alumni relationships; and provide visionary leadership for and effective management of the School.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include an earned terminal degree in music; a record of peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity commensurate with appointment as an associate or full professor at The University of Southern Mississippi; evidence of the ability to inspire and work productively with faculty, staff, and students of diverse backgrounds and musical interests; a commitment to shared governance and transparency; the ability to secure internal and external funding; the ability to communicate effectively with the community and other constituents; and an established record as a successful administrator at a four-year accredited university.  Preferred candidates will demonstrate the ability to promote relationships with arts-based community groups, prepare budgets, manage personnel, and develop accreditation and assessment plans.
