Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Office of Research and Innovation ( ORI ) stimulates and supports UNCW research, scholarship, creativity, and innovation (collectively “research”). This research enhances student learning, discovers new knowledge, forges knowledge leaders, and solves problems critical to North Carolina and the world. The office provides strategic vision, efficient administrative services and training, and leadership to create crucial infrastructure, partnerships, and programs to achieve research excellence and impact. The Office is comprised of three administrative units and a collection of centers, institutes, and programs. The administrative units include the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance ( SPARC ), the Research Integrity Office ( RIO ), and the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, and the centers and institutes include the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship ( CIE ), Marine Biotechnology in North Carolina ( MARBIONC ), and the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Identity Sciences (I3S).

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Research Development Specialist ( RDS ) is responsible for increasing institutional research competitiveness through targeted capacity building, supporting strategic initiatives, developing partnerships and interdisciplinary teams, and research related professional development and programming. This position will also support communications about UNCW research, scholarship, and creative activities. We seek a highly collaborative and versatile colleague with attention to detail, impeccable writing skills, strong facilitation skills. The ideal candidate is characterized by curiosity, creativity, and compassion, and is someone who thrives in a dynamic environment.

The RDS will be a critical and valued member of the the UNCW Office of Research and Innovation ( ORI ) team, and work to cultivate a strong research culture and growth as a national research university. They will partner with the ORI units to expand externally sponsored programs and innovation. This position reports to the Associate Provost for Research and Innovation.

The primary job duties include:

Research Development:
• Lead development and implementation of short-term and long-term strategies and programs to enhance UNCW research, scholarship, creativity, and innovation. This includes managing and expanding existing programs (e.g., Interdisciplinary Research Seminar Series, Research Colliders, Research Symposia).
• Convene and coordinate the formation of transdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and/or otherwise collaborative research teams.
• Catalyze new cross-disciplinary research initiatives
• Consult with faculty about strategies on programs and projects that improve their competitive research capacity to obtain external funding.
• Provide research development programs, training, and professional development including workshops and consultations.
• Assist with Sponsor site visits.
• Contribute to decisions regarding internal funding
• Promote and support the development of faculty and researcher applications to prestigious and highly prestigious fellowships, awards, and honors.
• Partner with SPARC to identify and distribute external sponsored funding opportunities and provide guidance and interpretation of those opportunities.
• Collaborate with the other ORI units to enhance and expand research activities and competitiveness.
• Supports project management, grant writing, editing, and review for select large complex research initiatives, and may serve as lead grant writer on targeted institutional initiatives.

Communications:
• Work with the UNCW Office of University Relations and other campus communicators to support the development and dissemination of research stories, the ORI newsletter, the annual Research Magazine, and other publications that support the research enterprise and research engagement.
• Raise profile of university strengths that add to visibility or impact of university with external funding sources.
• Write news stories and press releases to promote UNCW research, scholarship, creativity, and innovation.
• Support posting to UNCW ORI social media accounts, and website enhancements.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

•3 years of related experience working in research development, program development, communications, grant writing or support of extramural grants and contracts.
•Excellent skills in grant and technical writing, including structuring of large documents.
•Experience writing, editing, and managing complex proposals.
•Skills to form and support multi-disciplinary teams to successfully complete projects.
•Skilled in program planning and management of projects.
•Strong group facilitation skills.
•Ability to analyze, present, and critique information in different ways for different end-users.
•Ability to take initiative on projects, work individually, and collaborate with teams.
•Possess outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
•Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with various types of customers, faculty, support staff, federal agency representatives, private organization officers.
•Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytic skills.
•Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams.
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with a wide variety of individuals including all levels of responsibility and a wide variety of cultural backgrounds to achieve results.
•Ability to stay focused, organized, and self-manage with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
•Knowledge of external funding processes, including funding agency guidelines and objectives, grant proposal creation and submission.
•Ability to write reports, guidelines and procedures, using extensive software tools.
•Ability to write press releases for internal and external audiences about university research discoveries and successes.
•Skills to establish rapport and work closely with a diverse community and clientele.
•Demonstrated ability to create collaborative and respectful work environments, and ability to support and promote outstanding customer service.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

Graduate Degree is preferred.

Experience working in a university setting.

3 years of experience working in a university department and/or central research administration office.

Project management experience and certification.

Knowledge of Team Science and Collaborative Research techniques.

Experience conducting primary research.

Experience with federal grant systems such as NIH eRA commons, research.gov, and NSF Fastlane.

Experience with electronic research administration tools (e.g., RAMSeS, InfoEd Global, InfoReady Review).

Experience developing and applying a research development matrix for an organization.

Certified Research Administrator ( CRA ) or Pre-Award ( CPRA ) certification.

Member of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals ( NORDP ).

Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite.

Knowledge of research development techniques to boost faculty research programs and impact, and grow institutional research competitiveness.
