A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's existing academic and operational success. The Director of Campus Safety & Emergency Management shall have the primary responsibility for: 1) the development, implementation and management of Campus Safety and Security programs and services including, but not limited to security, environmental health and safety, fire safety, emergency management and key control. 2) enforcement of compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations related to campus safety, and 3) ensuring that day to day security, public safety functions, and new initiatives are aligned with the Universities Strategic Plan.

Essential Functions:

The Director of Campus Safety & Emergency Management will handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize, and bring to completion multiple projects. Collaboration with local law enforcement departments to address matters of mutual concern. Coordination with internal/external emergency response protocols and and/or agencies. Execution of warrants as requested by local Law Enforcement.

  • Be responsible for the oversight and management of FMU’s Campus Safety and Security, a 24/7/365 operation; including management of outsourced of contract security vendor, providing direction in hiring, training, and supervision.
  • Be available between University operations hours and on-call and available for emergency calls.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement departments to address matters of mutual concern.
  • Coordinate with internal/external emergency response protocols and and/or agencies.
  • Execute warrants as requested by local Law Enforcement.
  • Collaborate with other emergency management personnel and local, state or federal officials when preparing for, responding to, or recovering from disasters.
  • Provide support to, and developing liaisons with, other agencies, organizations or companies involved in developing disaster preparedness programs.
  • Be responsible for development and maintenance of excellent working relationships with students, faculty, staff and external customers/constituents; with continuous improvement in departmental services to meet or exceed internal and external customer expectations.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive public safety programs policies and procedures.
  • Enforce compliance with all local, state and federal laws as well as crime reporting (Clery) mandates.
  • Participate and engage in pertinent meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Finance and Administration.
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and training of a full-time Director of Campus Safety and Security.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Work involves establishing criteria; formulating projects; assessing program effectiveness; or investigating or analyzing a variety of unusual conditions, problems, or questions. The work product or service affects a wide range of organizational activities and/or departments.
  • No direct supervision; requires an innovative, creative thinker to initiate long range programs, goals, policies and procedures. Ability to foresee and assess potential problems and to plan alternative solutions.
  • Uses independent judgment in planning sequence of major operations and in making decisions from complex alternatives. Analyzes data to solve complex, non-routine problems; interprets general policy and develops instructions for others.
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.


Qualifications:

  • The position requires a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or directly related with five plus years’ experience in higher education preferred.
  • Title IX Administrator, Level One and Level Two Civil Rights Investigation training and certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
  • Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
