Departmental Overview

This is a shared position between the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (50%) and Research, Teaching and Learning Services (50%).

The Division of Computing, Data Science and Society (CDSS) brings together programs, schools, and departments from across campus to create rich educational opportunities and ignite groundbreaking research to meet society's greatest challenges. Over the past 5 years CDSS has scaled from a small server for teaching the popular Data 8 class, to the cloud-based educational Juptyerhub for teaching to thousands of users in dozens of departments across campus, the Berkeley DataHub. UC Berkeley has one of the premier deployments of a teaching Jupyterhub, and supporting this includes engineering new tools, developing novel curriculum, and documenting user practices. '

Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) supports the teaching and research needs of Berkeley faculty, students, and academic staff by offering expert consulting, providing vetted tools and essential services, and advocating for its broad constituency and mission-focused portfolio with campus policy makers and vendors. The combination of enterprise teaching and research technology groups within RTL improves coordination across functions; provides a richer, more seamless experience for end users; and creates opportunities for innovation. RTL has dual reporting lines to the Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education and the Office of the CIO.

UC Berkeley has one of the premier deployments of a teaching Jupyterhub, and supporting this includes engineering new tools, developing novel curriculum, and documenting user practices. The Data Hub Service Lead will use skills as a seasoned, experienced professional to lead and design a service that supports effective delivery of interactive computing environments to educators and students using the DataHub; resolves a wide range of business processing challenges. This is a full-time position in a career appointment.

Responsibilities

DataHub Service Lead:
  • Acts as Service Lead for the campus DataHub.
  • Serve as functional owner of the UC Berkeley DataHub.
  • Coordinate integration with and serve as a functionality liaison with other services, e.g., the learning management system (bCourses).
  • Identify and execute on creative, strategic and business opportunities across campus.
  • Coordinate with technical teams to guide development and deployment of the DataHub service.
  • Participate with key stakeholders and governance groups to develop Campus-wide data science service strategy.
  • Coordinate with cloud vendors to ensure the continued service of the DataHub on any vendor infrastructure.
  • Develop and communicate service roadmap.
  • Create/negotiate service and operating level agreements.
  • Identify and advocate for appropriate support resources needed to deliver service within established service levels.
  • Establish and maintain support model and service documentation (e.g., knowledge base, trainings/workshops, consultations, web-presence, etc.).
  • Define support processes, key performance indicators, and partnerships/contracts are in place to deliver the service within established service levels.
  • Coordinate with the Project Management Office (PMO) for service transition projects: rollout (operationalization), improvements, and decommissioning.
  • Monitor and report on critical success factors and key performance indicators of the service.
  • Manage service communications to stakeholders, constituents, and customers; and coordinate feedback from the community regarding future directions.
  • Participate in incident/problem management.
  • Establish and document partnerships via MOU.
  • Ensure continuity of operations.

DataHub Design Lead:
  • Leads in cross-functional service design for individual and departmental users.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote the service.
  • Adapt outreach and communications efforts to different audiences: instructors, students, staff.
  • Provide technical expertise in identifying, evaluating, and developing complex systems and procedures.
  • Gather, analyze, prepare, and summarize business and user needs, documenting requirements, and revising existing system logic difficulties as necessary.
  • Validate requirements against needs.
  • Apply business systems concepts to design details of complex automated systems.
  • Keep abreast of trends and development in the field.
  • Present at professional conferences.
  • Pursue relevant training and certification as part of a professional development plan.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of business and process analysis functions.
  • Experience with open source communities and development practices.
  • Demonstrated skills needed to develop conversion process and system implementation plans.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Interpersonal and communications skills to work with both technical and nontechnical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Experience with the Jupyter ecosystem in an educational context.
  • Knowledge relating to the design of applications programs in an academic setting.
  • Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification, and implementation.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with process analysis, systems analysis, process architectures and systems analysis methodologies and practices including traditional waterfall, Agile, Agile Scrum, UML, UML Enterprise, et cetera.
  • Knowledge of department processes and procedures.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
