The Mathematical Sciences Department at Lycoming College invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor in Computer Science with a starting date of August 2021. A Ph.D. in either Computer Science or a closely related field is required, though ABDs who will complete their Ph.D. prior to August 2021 are welcome to apply. Prior experience teaching undergraduate students is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a subset of Introduction to Computer Science (Java), Advanced Programming (C++), and Applied Discrete Mathematics in support of Lycoming’s minors in computer science and computational science. In addition, they will be expected to teach both Data Structures and one or more upper level courses, which can either be courses currently on the books such as Web-Based Programming and Database Systems, or electives in the successful candidate’s own area of specialization. Lycoming has a strong first year seminar program, and interest in developing a first-year seminar in issues surrounding computer science is a plus. The College is considering adding majors in computer science and/or data science.
Lycoming College is a small liberal arts college committed exclusively to the education of undergraduate students. The general teaching load is 3 courses per semester. Often, this will be two courses with labs. Highly effective teaching is the top priority of all faculty, and innovative approaches to teaching are welcome. Professional achievement (broadly defined but resulting in peer-reviewed work) as well as service to the department, College, and community are also required for tenure and promotion.
To apply, please submit a cover letter addressing your interest in teaching computer science at a liberal arts college, a current CV and a statement of teaching philosophy. Applications can be directly submitted through our employment opportunities website. In addition, please arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation, at least two of which address teaching, to be sent on your behalf. Letters of recommendation may be sent electronically to jobs@lycoming.edu or hard copies may be sent to:
