The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Howard University consist of two undergraduate programs (B.S. in elementary education and a secondary education minor program), three master’s degree programs in elementary, secondary, and special education, and has several school and university partnerships.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction seeks a scholar and experienced professional for a full-time, tenured/tenure-track position at the rank of associate professor or full professor to begin in August 2021. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction seeks candidates who are committed to academic excellence and innovation at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Teacher Education

Preferred candidates should have demonstrated: a) an academic foundation in theory and practice related to educational psychology; b) emphasis on equitable assessment for diverse learners; c) evidence of successful university instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels; d) experience teaching in K-12 educational settings; e) excellence in research related to urban education with emphasis on African American learners; and e) established grant and publication record.   


Candidates must demonstrate strong research productivity, including an active record of producing high-quality publications with a focus on African American learners or students from marginalized backgrounds and demonstrated outcomes in seeking external funding. Candidates must commit to: working in a productive, collegial atmosphere; preparing teachers to serve diverse populations in urban environments; developing and delivering undergraduate and graduate courses; advising students, and supporting student scholarship. Other requirements include an earned doctorate in an appropriate field and three or more years of K-12 teaching experience. 

This position will include the appointment as an Associate Chair that will assist the Department Chair in the pursuit and communication of Department goals.  This would include ensuring the interpretation of the School of Education and Department policies into action; monitoring the status of State and program approvals, leading functions around student advisement; and effectively assessing and addressing student needs.
