Assistant Director for Intensive Clinical Services

The Assistant Director for Intensive Clinical Services reports to the Associate Director for Counseling at Michigan State University Counseling & Psychiatric Services (MSU CAPS). This position is responsible for the Intensive Clinical Services Unit (ICSU) and the functions housed in this unit. This position works closely with a cohesive administrative team at CAPS and receives assistance from administrative support staff. As a leader of a multidisciplinary health team overseeing a treatment program and department-wide response to mental health crises, this position oversees and supports staff members in implementing multidisciplinary treatment plans for each student in the treatment program or who accesses crisis services, provides direct clinical services including administration and interpretation of some assessment measures, manages staff and train multidisciplinary trainees, analyzes data for patient tracking and annual reports, and manages own patient scheduling and documentation responsibilities.

The ICSU was formed in 2018 due to a commitment from the University and Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) administration to support the provision of intensive clinical services to students in need of a higher level of care than traditional outpatient therapy or psychiatric services. Many MSU students have difficulty with severe and persistent mental illness(es), multiple needs for additional resources, chronic suicidal, homicidal, or self-harm risk factors; and/or multiple diagnoses that may cause significant impairment in academic and relationship functioning. The current Assistant Director is leaving for personal reasons and is committed to assisting with the transition.

The Assistant Director will lead the ICSU (https://caps.msu.edu/services/icsu.html) and work closely with MSU Student Health & Wellness Departments such as Primary Care, and CAPS units such as Clinical Coordination/Care Management Unit, Psychiatric Services, and the CAPS Screening/Triage System to ameliorate the impact of student mental health crises and treat students with severe and persistent mental illnesses on an ongoing basis. When clinically-indicated during a mental health emergency, they will either delegate staff to or personally accompany MSU police officers on wellness checks or students to the emergency room to support continuity of care, advocate for students and/or their families, and facilitate discharge planning; they may visit patients or families in hospital settings.

The successful candidate will lead the ICSU in providing high quality care, consultation to providers in responding to different crises, leadership in responding to campus crises, engagement with administration in collaboration with relevant campus and community departments, and demonstrate a significant commitment to multiculturalism and serving underrepresented/underserved populations.

MSU CAPS offers many services virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic; at present, this position is a combination of onsite and virtual duties. CAPS provides a wide range of mental health services for diverse students, including and not limited to: screening/triage appointments, individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, outreach and multicultural engagement, clinical coordination (i.e., case management/referral coordination services), intensive integrated clinical services, crisis intervention, and hospitalization coordination and support. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

• Dialectical Behavior Therapy-informed individual psychotherapy with SPMI/SMI collegiate student population
• Additional clinical direct service areas include and are not limited to group therapy; crisis assessment and urgent/emergent intervention; administration and interpretation of assessment measures
• Assessing for/providing clinical certificates for involuntary hospitalizations
• Some standardized psychological assessment procedures
• Provide criteria, education, and consultation to assist CAPS providers in determining need for intensive clinical services treatment model or other LOC
• Collaborate with ICSU team, students support systems, CAPS administrators & staff, trainees, SHW partners, campus partners, and community partners to provide quality services for students in need of higher levels of care and/or additional support to ameliorate impact of chronic mental health conditions
• Collaborate with relevant stakeholders (e.g., MSU Police Department) to improve services for students
• Clinical and programmatic oversight of the Treatment Program and Crisis & Stabilization services
• Collect and analyze outcome data/performance & chart review information for service provision quality assurance
• Supervise the staff in the ICSU and associated rotating trainees through our training program’s clinical rotation(s) through this unit
• Co-coordinate/direct CAPS response to critical incidents on campus (e.g., deaths)
• Oversight of associated policy, form, & procedure development; and equipment & materials for the unit
• Manage some scheduling functions, with frequent management of patient care tracking and documentation functions.
• Participates as a leader, team member, and/or liaison in staff meetings, committees, conferences, and organizational/administrative meetings.
• Prioritize multicultural/feminist approaches and honor multiple ways of knowing, foster cultural humility and sensitivity within self and team
• Other duties, as assigned by administrative supervisor(s). 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing more than four years of graduate study beyond a bachelor’s degree, such as a doctorate in clinical psychology or counseling psychology, one year predoctoral full time internship (by a licensed psychologist), six months to one year of related experience in psychotherapy in a clinic/agency environment, or license eligible in the state of Michigan within eighteen months from date of hire.

If the applicant has a limited license in psychology in Michigan, or is eligible to immediately obtain limited licensure in psychology in Michigan (Psychologist LLP License commonly held during residency), then the applicant must meet the following two criteria in order to receive an offer for employment for this position:

• (1) Provide documentation of having passed the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)
• (2) A successful collaborative review between CAPS and candidate to confirm all requirements are capable of being met for full licensure in Michigan by December 31st, 2021 including the obtainment of all requisite post-doctoral supervision hours and educational requirements. Upon hire, the successful candidate with these qualifications would receive supervision for licensure provided by CAPS.

• High tolerance for chaotic, intense situations
• Comfort with a fast-paced work environment
• Knowledge of electronic medical records, data entry, and various technological proficiencies.
• Previous interactions with mental health agencies/environments, hospitals, individuals and families in crisis or with significant mental health concerns, and government agencies (e.g., CPS, DHS, Police Departments, etc.)
