The Executive Director of Digital creates and implements digital strategies that direct the vision and development of the university’s marketing digital goals. Has primary responsibility for the University’s marketing digital properties, including all social media platforms. Responsible for implementation of predetermined marketing concepts and style guides, consolidation/simplification of many pages into easily navigable and referenced information set, and use most recent technology to present a current, fresh and responsive site. Along with team, partner with University schools/colleges/units to analyze needs, provide insight/guidance, implement/upgrade existing websites based on the university’s digital strategy. Manages team of digital/social media strategists, interactive designers and web developers to implement projects on a timely, cost-effective basis, including advising on media buying. Maintain and improve the university’s digital communications architecture and strategies. Lead planning and implementation efforts using the University’s editorial content and the data derived from digital platforms to thoughtfully engage it’s diverse and well informed audiences with a deep understanding of the spectrum of digital marketing. Creates and implements modern approaches to advance business goals.


• Bachelor’s Degree in Information Management, Engineering or field that blends communications or art with technical skills.

• Minimum of eight (8) years of managing digital teams with direct reports that include a diverse skillset including SEO, paid media management, analytics and creative.

• Minimum of five (5) years work experience as web developer, UX designer, content strategist or a combination of those roles.

• Minimum of three (3) years working in strategic marketing program management including setting strategic goals for department, assessing available analytics to determine success and ROI of specific campaigns, allocating budgets for multiple channel spends.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Digital platform leader experienced in building strategies, socialization and execution.

• Experience working in higher education preferred.


• Develop digital strategies (for both web and social media) designed to increase University’s engagement with key audiences including prospective and current students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff and others.

• Develop web architecture and content management platform to effectively distribute content that is engaging, relevant, and reflective of University’s mission and values.

• Direct management and leadership of team of professionals with the scope of hiring, coaching and developing staff, including student interns. The Digital team includes Directors/teams for Social Media, Web Development, Web Platform & Infrastructure, Digital Strategy.

• The Executive Director of Digital will manage enterprise strategic direction, execution, socialization, mentor-ship and guidance of university partners on digital platforms. This position has significant reach and influence across the university and is seen as digital technology leader and innovator.

• Manage University’s digital properties, including websites and all social media channels, and collaborate with other senior leadership to integrate with marketing and communications divisional strategies and ensure content is current, inviting, streamlined, and consistent with the University brand.

• Develop and implement digital governance practices under a common set of guidelines.

• Work collaboratively with information technology and communications professionals, steering committees, functional area leaders, and the campus community to connect business objectives with technology. Includes oversight and leadership of content management system selection and maintenance, content taxonomies, web hosting, web programming, web security, integration with on campus and cloud services, accessibility and mobile standards and techniques to enhance the campus’s communications efforts.

• Coordinate closely with campus leadership to ensure digital strategies (including social media) and development are aligned with the University’s broader goals and objectives.

• Develop relationships with campus counterparts that encourage collaboration and support for system wide priorities.

• Evaluate and integrate new and evolving platforms and tools to reach and engage new audiences as well as to build back to existing audiences.

• Develop new channels when appropriate. Ensures digital efforts are integrated into broader marketing plans to advance business goals.

• Builds collaborative relationships to strengthen audience engagement in ways, uses research insights and analytics to drive daily marketing decision-making.

• Partners with issues management team for timely and effective social media response during crisis.

• Manage and provide support in all aspects of the University’s Web Content Management System ( CMS ) program, including adoption by campus departments, standard taxonomies, metrics reporting, account management, system administration and coordination of training.

• Partner with University community web developers and contractors to establish web code, documentation, reuse rights, and technology standards.

• Curates content, in alignment with Syracuse University brand identity standards and communication messaging guidelines.

• Partners with content team to ensure its dynamic, timely and fits within the digital strategy.

• Monitor server usage and recommend new technologies as indicated; monitor site analytics and searches. Develop Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) strategies to develop better search results in top search engines; identify and lead efforts to decommission redundant platforms and tools as appropriate.

• Establish departmental goals and objectives and clear metrics to track progress toward those goals. When necessary, collaborate with marketing strategy to advise on digital advertising on behalf of University and coordinate with campus to streamline digital advertising and metrics collection.

• Stays up-to-date on industry trends. Other duties as assigned.
