The primary role of the Division of Diversity and Inclusion is to ensure that diversity, in its many forms, is understood, respected, and valued. The Division advocates for access, equity and inclusion while encouraging critical dialogue, thinking, and meaningful educational interactions on campus and in the community. The Division includes the following departments: Campus Climate, ACCESS Center, Diversity and Inclusion, Multicultural Student Services, Pride Center, Student Support Services, and Upward Bound.

Position Summary

UW-La Crosse Office of Multicultural Student Services is seeking a full time Precollege Coordinator to plan and supervise various precollege initiatives that serve multicultural and disadvantage (M/D) youth, 1st-12th school-aged students. The individual in this position will plan and supervise various precollege initiatives that serve multicultural and disadvantage (M/D) youth, 1st-12th school-aged students, recruit precollege students, university students, staff, and volunteers. This position also involves collaborating with local school districts and other community partners to plan and implement site-based programming. In addition, the Precollege Coordinator will assist the Office of Multicultural Student Services ( OMSS ) & UWL’s Admissions office with K-12 visit days. As a part of the OMSS staff team, participation in retention and advocacy on behalf of multicultural university students is required. This individual reports to the Outreach Program Manager.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required in education, school counseling, school social work, or related field
• A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Must be authorized to drive university vehicles
• Demonstrated ability to work with low-income, first-generation, multicultural, and diverse 1st-12th grade students in an educational setting
• Demonstrated record of conducting assessment, and/or evaluations of programs, students and staff
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills. Ideal candidate should demonstrate ability to be highly organized and detailed-oriented
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency w/ MS Office applications
• Requires evening and weekend work with occasional overnight travel
• Ability to work cooperatively/effectively to develop key partnerships with various faculty, staff, and students throughout the campus community, and with parents, families, school administrators or other community partners
• Ability to be a self-starter and take initiative
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree education, school counseling, school social work, or related field
• Knowledge of multicultural communities and values
• Experience training and supervising tutors and coordinating advising, tutoring, and small group discussions
• Previous Precollege experience
• Ability to speak and write Spanish and/or Hmong fluently

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift materials and equipment weighing up to 50-75 pounds

Working conditions and environment

• Requires evening and weekend work with occasional overnight travel.

Precollege Programming

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Manage and develop programming for Academic Year and Summer Camp Programs (Mentoring and Readiness for College ( MARC ), SMART (Summer, Mentoring and Reading Together ( SMART ) and Mississippi River Adventure Introductory and Leadership Camps ( MRA ))
• Supervise and participate in program activities that may include (e.g., hiking, camping, swimming) related to academic tutoring and summer camps
• Oversee facility, equipment and/or vehicle reservations usage and implement changes when necessary and supervise equipment procurement and return
• Communicate with appropriate faculty members, school staff and/or community members to plan, coordinate and oversee events and activities related to programming as needed
• Oversee the completion of student, tutor, and parent contracts, registration forms, Department of Public Instruction ( DPI ) Precollege Scholarship Applications and obtain grade reports, and other assessment data, for each student as needed
• Participate in recruitment fairs and other events to recruit new students (paid and volunteers) and staff year-around
• Facilitate regular meetings with precollege staff to assure the achievement of objectives and goals for each program
• Report any potentially dangerous incident, or concern, that occurs under your supervision within 24 hours (or ASAP if an emergency) to the Outreach Manager
• Implement other aspects of MARC, SMART and MRA as assigned by the Outreach Manager

Office Management

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Oversee and the training, supervision, creation of job responsibilities, schedules and placements, time sheets, and performance evaluation of site supervisors, work study and student help employees, summer camp instructors, staff, and student volunteers
• Assist with student-staff payroll and hiring/onboarding processes
• Oversee the design and creation of updated precollege brochures, website and social media sites, power point presentations and other materials intended to publicize programs and assist in recruiting students and educating campus and community members
• Organize, upgrade, and maintain student and staff files, electronic and physical
• Oversee student helpers/office assistants conducting weekly and seasonal clerical duties
• Oversee and evaluate programs delivered by Precollege – create and submit an annual report for each program
• Oversee maintenance and analysis of documents regarding program evaluations, student assessments, and conduct follow-up surveys of participants designed to determine the efficacy of program objectives and goals
• Maintain databases and analysis system that support accountability reporting
• Assist with the biannual Department of Public Instruction Precollege Scholarship Grant proposal writing process
• Assist with securing other grant opportunities
• Participate in the precollege administrative team’s (as well as OMSS office meetings) weekly planning meeting during the academic year, supervision and dialogue sessions as required; and assist with periodic “strategic planning” sessions

• Serve as mentor to the UWL community services (work study) students assigned to the pre-college programs as part of their financial aid award
• Mentor and advise other multicultural students as assigned by OMSS as part of the office’s retention efforts
• Serve on university committees as assigned by the OMSS Director and/or Outreach Manager
• Promote and publicize precollege programs on and off campus
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships while serving as a liaison and consultant for on and off campus referrals and resources
• Provide appropriate office representation at campus, local, regional, and state levels
• Attend System-wide precollege meetings and oversee the generation and submission of program participation data, academic outcomes and other assessments and evaluations to the UW System as needed
