Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Genomics Core is seeking a highly qualified, service minded and innovative manager to lead the day-to-day work at the high-throughput sequencing facility. The mission of the VCU Genomics Core is to provide state-of-the-art lab-technical genomic services and necessary analysis support to synergize, enhance and advance genomic research at VCU and beyond. The vision for the VCU Genomics Core is to serve as a nucleus that synergizes genomic expertise, advanced technology, lab-technical support and insight in novel directions of the field for developing and conducting leading edge genomic research by providing cost-effective, high quality services in a timely manner. Thus, the Genomics Core will develop and implement standardized, customized and specialized sample- and library preparation protocols, provide sequencing and ancillary services, advise investigators in experimental design and provide insight about novel innovative protocols and approaches.

The Manager will be responsible for the daily operations of the VCU Genomics Core, including day-to-day leadership, consultation and training of the technical team members; creating and supporting an environment to foster teamwork, cooperation, respect and diversity; providing direction regarding overall laboratory staffing and allocation of time to specific projects; taking responsibility for correct handling of critical instrumentation and customer samples; developing new experimental procedures and core service protocols as needed; serving as the first point of contact for customer support; being responsible for proper budgeting and billing of projects; and performing hands-on lab-technical work as required.
The Manager will work under supervision of the co-directors, who will assist in complex applications, but is expected to be able to resolve routine issues independently. Furthermore, in consolation with the co-directors, the Manager will develop processes and implement routines to ensure highest possible quality of the work performed and to evaluate and ensure customer satisfaction.

Minimum Hiring Standards

The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in genomics research (or equivalent) and hands on experience with advanced molecular biology/genetics; will have significant hands on experience in contemporary high-throughput sequencing technologies and instrumentation; and will be a visionary team leader. Exceptional communication and organizational skills are required. Ability to process and interpret omic data is critical. The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

The successful applicant will have at least 5 years of working experience/post-doctoral training in genomics research (or equivalent) experience with multiple technologies is preferred with documented team leadership experience. A candidate with prior experience in managing a sequencing facility is preferred.
