The University of Montana invites applications for a tenure track, Assistant Professor Public Administration & Policy with the appointment beginning August 2021. The Department of Public Administration and Policy is home to some of the most successful, innovative programs and scholars at the University of Montana and is centrally located within the School of Law’s Baucus Institute (the only accredited MPA Program in the state and School of Law in the nation). The Department attracts a diverse student population, both in-state and out-of-state students, and early and mid-career professionals. The successful candidate is required to teach public administration courses at the graduate level and periodically classes in the undergraduate minor in nonprofit administration. The area of expertise in public administration is open; however, applicants will be required to be a well-rounded public administration generalist with experience teaching across core curriculum offerings (e.g. Organization Theory, Human Resource Management, Policy Analysis, Applied Research Methods; Introduction to Public Service, Leadership and Nonprofits).

Position Details
  • Position is full-time (1.0 FTE), academic year, tenure-track faculty position and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health and life insurance, mandatory retirement savings plan, partial tuition waiver, and an employee wellness program.
  • 3:2 teaching load, active research agenda, and commitment to public service is expected
  • Salary for this position is $62,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.


Minimum Qualifications
  • MPA/MPP
  • Ph.D. in public administration, public policy, or related field
  • Five (5) years professional experience in the public or nonprofit sector
  • Experience teaching online (asynchronous) and in-person
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural awareness
  • Experience teaching in public administration at graduate level and some experience at the undergraduate level


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two (2) years of experience at the rank of an Assistant Professor or Lecturer
  • Evidence of a commitment to student success through substantial and continued effectiveness in teaching, advising, and other student related responsibilities
  • Evidence of an active research agenda (e.g. peered reviewed publications)
  • Clear evidence of a strong commitment to collegiality, a commitment to working within a teamwork environment, and cultural awareness

The University of Montana’s Department of Public Administration and Policy is housed within the Max S. Baucus Institute and provide a cutting-edge education for individuals interested in excelling in the public service profession. The department offers the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree, which is typically required for many administrative positions in the public and nonprofit sectors; UM's MPA program is created to be flexible for pre-career and mid-career professionals. The department also offers graduate level certificates in public administration, public policy, and nonprofit administration, in addition to a nonprofit undergraduate minor.
