Under the primary supervision of the Director of Institutional
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion along with a critically important
and shared reporting relationship to the Director of the Tutoring
Center, the Assistant Director will have primary responsibility for
implementing access and success activities for low-income students
and 1st generation college students of color. Strategies and
initiatives must be based in consideration of national best
practices, research, current programs and resources available. This
position requires thoughtful and strategic advocacy on academic,
economic, campus environment, and social justice issues impacting
underrepresented and marginalized students.
The Assistant Director will work with the Intercultural Center and
the Center for Student Academic Success, as well as partners across
campus, to create structures that advance the achievement of RWU's
diversity, equity and inclusion, retention and student success
goals. The Assistant Director will develop and implement
connections with campus academic support programs in CSAS and out
of classroom support resources within Student Life.
The incumbent is responsible for mentoring and advising students
who are participants in programs under DEI as well as students who
are not in a DEI program but who identify as students of color, low
income and first generation. The Assistant Director will engage
with faculty and staff to create mentor relationships, particularly
for first-year students. The Assistant Director will work and
interact with student clubs and organizations and may be asked to
serve as an advisor.
The Assistant Director will create a coherent, centralized data
collection base using campus systems such as Colleague and
TutorTrac to measure student success through both quantitative and
qualitative measures. The person in this position will collect,
analyze and share this information on a regular basis with internal
and external partners.
Program
Serve as the primary coordinator of success and affinity
initiatives for students in SOAR, P2P, and student identity
affinity spaces and organizations. Co-coordinate Summer pre-college
opportunities.
Direct success programs and opportunities designed to support and
empower underrepresented students. Lead affinity based initiatives
designed to support a welcoming climate and help retain
underrepresented students. Establish positive and supportive
relationships with underrepresented students and people across
campus who support the students.
Data collection
Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with
Institutional Research is critically important. Data collection and
maintenance of databases for tracking the success and challenges of
the program and plans to make changes in the services
provided.
Track student progress and be involved with communicating with
faculty, advising and tutoring offices. Track warning grades, GPA,
academic schedule timelines, and financial aid.
Assist the directors to facilitate grant application submission for
additional funding to the operational budget of the programs.
Initiatives and Training
Engage in the development and implementation of access, success and
equity programs and initiatives.
Collaborate with the Directors on the coordination and
implementation of initiatives, programs and practices that support
institutional strategies to foster diversity, equity and inclusion
and collaborate with critical partners in Student Life, the Center
for Student Academic Success, Enrollment Management and Financial
Aid.
Participate in division and University-wide initiatives, programs
and committees as appropriate
Outreach
Assist with and develop marketing and publicity strategies for
access and success initiatives and programs for underserved
students (1st generation, students of color, low income,
etc.).
Support the recruitment of underrepresented students by staffing
open houses and accepted student days and partnering with
Admissions in their outreach and pre-college program efforts.
Outreach and connect with students in the programs as well as
connect with students not part of these programs who will also look
to the position for support.
Organizational Assistance
Supervise work study students, interns or volunteers focused on
access and success.
Perform administrative, non-clerical duties to support efforts.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's in related field..
At least two to three years of direct, full-time experience
designing and implementing access and success programs for
underrepresented students (including mentoring, identity
development, and advising).
Knowledge and understanding of the factors supporting the success
of underrepresented students (i.e. students of color, low-income
students, 1st generation, etc.).
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with underserved and
marginalized students.
Demonstrated experience working and communicating effectively with
diverse populations and creating inclusive and equitable
communities. Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Established record of building positive relationships.
Ability to think creatively, multi-task and work well both
independently and collaboratively.
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of
Microsoft Office Suite.
Available to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in related field,.
Experience working in a higher education setting.
Experience advising students and program implementations.
Experience developing and facilitating trainings and programs on
equity, diversity and inclusion.
Experience leading identity development initiatives.
Experience in data management.
Demonstrated history of using equity, diversity and inclusion lens
in delivering programs and services.
