General Summary

This position manages financial activities related to the academic and clinical practice for the

Department of Medicine. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Finance to ensure smooth and efficient functioning of the financial aspects of practice. Will act as point of contact with departmental management on financial and other related accounting functions including providing instruction on regulations and guidelines pertinent to the University. Manages the development of budgeting activities related to the All Funds for Johns Hopkins University. This position will interact with faculty, Hospital & University administrators as well as personnel within the Controller's office and Johns Hopkins affiliates.

Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Develops, monitors, and controls budgets in coordination with department leaders, creating systems and tools to improve financial accountability and awareness from managers
  2. Identifies and implements opportunities for data-driven cost savings measures in collaboration with key stakeholders and internal teams
  3. Organizes and leads, in conjunction with relevant clinical and operational teams, cost savings initiatives designed to maximize departmental resources while maintaining quality of care Develops analytic tools and reports to facilitate decisions by internal teams regarding resource allocations
  4. Develops business plans and cost-benefit analyses for new strategic initiatives
  5. Develops reports and tools to measure faculty compensation and productivity against external benchmarks
  6. Develops reports and tools to measure DOM expenses against internal and external benchmarks and find areas to opportunity to align/reduce expenses
  7. Serves as primary point of contact for departmental users on SAP and BW Analytics skills development and troubleshooting
  8. Oversees and updates financial data for benchmarking and annual reporting
  9. Preparation of a monthly Departmental Executive Summary for the Director of Finance Preparation of monthly Financial Reports, Variance Analysis & Re-projections submitted to the School of Medicine.
  1. Plans and conducts complex studies to determine cost of business activities. Recommends budget adjustments, and other cost improvement measures. Interprets data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial probability.
  2. Lead budget process and improvement for the Department
  3. Will focus on automation of standardized reports to help the Department transform processes.
  4. Prepares monthly variance financial reports for JHU Department of Medicine, as well as its Divisions within the Department of Medicine. Reviews monthly statements and compiles variance reports to highlight budget variances. Suggests and/or implements corrective actions on a monthly basis to ensure budget compliance.
  5. Manages the development of Department's JHU annual budgets and templates in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Finance. Utilizes operating plans to develop budgets and financial forecasts and prepares volume and revenue projections for clinical activities. Monitors expenditures, volumes and revenues against the budget. Submits operating budgets, volume and revenue projections. Develop budget projections, verifies all budgets and expenditures for accuracy. This includes monthly account reconciliation and assistance with month financial reports.
  6. Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, cost-accounting systems, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  7. Manage funding allocation for faculty and staff
  8. Monitor contractual agreements and ensures that monies are received and deposited appropriately. Develop financial reports to aid in the development of fiscal year clinical, joint agreement funds, general funds, and gift and discretionary funds budgets.
  9. Communicate with appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure that established procedures are followed.
  10. Analyze complex financial data and extract relevant information, interprets data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial profitability.
  11. Analyze budget patterns, project expenditures, and prepare approved budgets.
  12. Monitor, identify and communicate over-expenditures to faculty, departmental leaders, and administrative staff.
  1. Coordinates JHU/ non-sponsored departmental financial meetings to discuss issues related to cross training, educational opportunities, and financial management.

    Required: Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or other related field required.


Required: Five years progressively responsible experience in a related administrative/financial position, preferably in an academic or medical setting. Master's in a related field may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
