Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician functions as a member of the clinical team in the Abrons Student Health Center. Duties include performing test procedures, interpreting results, resolving or attempting to resolve procedural and/or instrumentation problems, communicating information for clinical use, training staff on lab procedures, and preparing lab for CLIA inspection along with Lab Director.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments ( CLIA ) regulations.
A complete knowledge of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment is required.

A general knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how the medical laboratory science is applied is required.

Excellent problem solving skills are required.

Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and the performance of procedures is required.

Must have the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families and colleagues.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

Previous experience in college health or a clinic based lab is preferred.

A minimum of one year’s experience working in a lab setting is required, 3 years is preferred.

ASCP Certification is preferred.

Required Certifications or licensure

A complete knowledge of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment is required.
