The iSchool is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, a position that requires experience in several modern programming environments. The Senior Software Engineer will consult with Principal Investigators to determine technical and analytical needs and solutions for research projects. The candidate should have experience with data in a variety of formats and should be comfortable with major operating systems (Windows, Unix/Linux, MacOS) and capable of management tasks on Linux systems (e.g., updating packages, managing cron jobs, etc.). The candidate should also be able to manage multiple student programmers working on multiple projects, architect and develop Web-based applications, develop tools to harvest various kinds of internet data, and analyze data. Ideally, the candidate would also have experience with machine learning and big data projects.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field required with a minimum of 10 years of professional work experience.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Must be proficient in Python, Java, or both.
• Must know: JavaScript, HTML, SQL, MongoDB, and one or more modern web development frameworks.
• Experience with the following is desirable: Shell Scripting, R, machine learning, cloud computing.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Principal Investigators to determine technical and analytical needs and solutions for research projects focused on building software and tools in data science.
• Assess hardware needs, software design and desired analytical processes.
• Manage the software development lifecycle starting with requirements analysis and moving through deployment, testing, and maintenance.
• Guide Principal Investigators through the ‘buy or build’ software decision process.
• Using appropriate languages and methods (Python, Java, JavaScript, R, C) as well open source software tools to develop software consistent with project needs and design specifications.
