Assistant or Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture
Assistant or Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture
Job Description Summary
The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture ( APLA ) at Auburn University, a comprehensive land-grant and research institution, seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor for an appointment in the Landscape Architecture Program commencing August 2021.
The Auburn Landscape Program is a research-informed, design-led program dedicated to training quality designers, addressing contemporary issues, and participating in critical landscape discourse. Grounded in the state of Alabama, we focus attention on places where the richness, complexity, and messiness of landscape is prominently felt, including post-industrial cities, infrastructural landscapes, rural landscapes, and coasts. Our curriculum places special emphasis on practices of fieldwork, landscape advocacy, and design research. At the end of both the undergraduate and graduate programs, students have the opportunity to work within the Alabama Lab, our design research lab.
Starting in the fall of 2021, Auburn’s Landscape Architecture Program will offer both an undergraduate and graduate degree in Landscape Architecture. After a multi-year process of research and development, the landscape faculty are excited to announce that the university and state agencies have approved our proposal to initiate a new Bachelor of Landscape Architecture ( BLA ) degree that will work in tandem with the established MLA program. The first class of BLA students will begin the program in August of 2021. The successful candidate will contribute to the critical development and direction of this new BLA program as well as the continued refinement and improvement of the MLA program.
In addition to the BLA and MLA, our School also offers four allied degree programs: Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Interior Architecture, Bachelor of Environmental Design, and Master of Science in Architecture/Option in Public Interest Design. We participate in a legacy of engaged public interest design work exemplified by our School’s two off-campus centers, the Rural Studio (Hale County, Alabama) and the Urban Studio (Birmingham, Alabama). APLA resides in the College of Architecture, Design, and Construction along with the McWhorter School of Building Science and the School of Industrial + Graphic Design. Opportunities for collaboration within the School, College, and broader University abound.
Responsibilities of the appointment include teaching, service, and research. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to maintain an active scholarly program disseminated through appropriate disciplinary venues. APLA faculty engage in and are supported in a broad range of formats for research and creative work. The successful candidate will be able to teach landscape design studios and core courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level in one or more of the following areas of our curriculum: beginning design, graphic studies, landform, materials and detailing, and/or urban ecology. We are looking for a hands-on collaborator who can participate in shaping a critical landscape pedagogy with us, either by building on our existing focal areas or by diversifying our expertise.
Candidates must have a Master of Landscape Architecture degree, or a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture plus a terminal degree in a related field, at the time employment begins. Excellent interpersonal skills are required. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time this position is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Auburn University is an EEO /Vet/Disability employer.
Desired qualifications include: evidence of outstanding design skills, experience with contemporary drawing and modeling techniques (such as analog media, Rhino, Grasshopper, ArcGIS, or digital fabrication), experience in professional practice, experience in teaching, professional registration, and/or advanced degrees in Landscape Architecture or related fields. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will have a strong design philosophy grounded in contemporary practice and will have a track record of investigating contemporary issues through techniques that translate to a design studio setting. We strongly encourage candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our academic community to apply.
