Quinnipiac University's School of Communications seeks applicants for a a tenure-track faculty position in Film, Television and Media Arts with a specialization in film history, theory and criticism. The Department seeks candidates who will contribute to the diversity of our academic community. This position will begin in August 2021.

About the Department:

The Department offers B.A. and B.F.A. degrees in Film, Television and Media Arts and an M.A. in Cinematic Production Management.

The strength of our film program is an integrated, collaborative curriculum that provides a foundation in all aspects of filmmaking, including: screenwriting, directing, producing, cinematography, sound acquisition, editing, post-production, as well as history, theory, and film analysis. This student-centered Department has a strong sense of community and the faculty are highly collaborative in teaching, research and creative endeavors.

About the Ed McMahon Communications Center:

The Ed McMahon Communications Center is a first-rate production facility equipped with industry standard technology and equipment for hands-on training in all aspects of film, television, journalism and multimedia production. Highlights of the center include a three-camera HDTV studio, a professional-quality audio production suite, and several 4K editing suites. Labs and classrooms are ideal for independent and group-based work, as well as a variety of multidisciplinary projects.

The Center’s 80 high-performance workstations enable students to work with numerous multimedia and imaging applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver and other industry-standard software including Final Draft, Movie Magic Scheduling and Budgeting.

An extensive equipment loan room makes professional caliber video and audio recording equipment and support gear available for use in the field. An inventory of over 100 digital cameras include Sony A73s, Canon EOSRs, Canon C-100s, Sony FS5s and Red Dragon Scarlet Ws.

We balance hands-on skills training with instruction in the liberal arts to prepare students for exciting and rewarding careers in advertising and integrated communications; communications/media studies; film, television and media arts; graphic and interactive design; journalism; and public relations. Responsibilities:

•Teaching responsibilities: instruct undergraduate courses each semester for fall and spring terms, including: Understanding Film, Analysis of the Moving Image, History of Film I, History of Film II, Senior Seminar (special topics). Opportunities exist for new course development and additional undergraduate and graduate teaching assignments.
• Establishment of a research, or creative agenda that provides opportunities for student involvement. Candidates whose research involves inquiry into gender, sexuality, race and disability are strongly urged to apply.
• Academic advising and mentoring.
• Engagement in university and community service appropriate to interests.

Education Requirements:

• Ph.D. in film, television, or related field is preferred.

• M.F.A. required.

Qualifications:

  • University level teaching experience of HTC courses is required. Additional experience in delivering hybrid and online courses preferred.
  • Knowledge and interest in world cinema and transnational cinematic movements, including: African Diasporic/Black, Latin American/Latinx, Asian, and Middle Eastern cinema.
  • Experience teaching screenwriting and/or film production preferred.
  • Commitment to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community is expected.
  • Candidates should be able to address issues of race and representation in all of their courses. Our ideal candidate will also possess a keen awareness of the current issues around diversity, inclusion, and equity within the film and television industry.
