The Head of Research and Instruction Services at LSU
Library reports to the Associate Dean for Public and Collection
Services. The incumbent develops strategy for the department's
support of research and instruction on the LSU campus and leads
outreach to university faculty and departments in order establish
partnerships throughout campus.
Job Responsibilities
LEADERSHIP IN RESEARCH. Fosters the development of
emerging and traditional information and research services
necessary to support the university’s mission of generating,
preserving, disseminating, and applying knowledge and cultivating
the arts; establishes goals for the department in concert with
the Library’s strategic plan; establishes policies and procedures
and organizes priorities within the department; oversees the
services offered by the LSU Library Research/Information desk.

ADMINISTRATION, MANAGEMENT & SUPERVISION
Hires and directly supervises all departmental staff, currently
including 12 librarians and 1 Coordinator, and provides indirect
supervision of several student workers. Serves on Advisory Group
representing Research and Instruction Services and provides
leadership within the library in coordinating efforts with other
library units. (25%)
INSTRUCTION SERVICES. Provides and directs outreach to
campus partners to lead and/or support campus wide instructional
initiatives; creates and maintains a visible presence on campus,
representing the Libraries in instruction initiatives; provides
innovative guidance, direction, planning, support, and assessment
of instructional services and initiatives at the Libraries;
oversees library instruction and outreach programs offered by RIS
librarians; remains current with best practices in research and
instructional services and incorporates these into the work of the
department. (20%)
RESEARCH AND SERVICE Works toward tenure and
promotion through research and service; serves on Library and LSU
committees, task forces, and interdepartmental groups as needed,
contributes to local, state regional and/or national service.

OTHER: Assumes liaison responsibilities that include
presentations to classes and consultations with students and
researchers within the assigned subject areas (as needed or desired
by the incumbent); coordinates with the Director of Collection
Development and Management to recommend materials for purchase for
the library in assigned subject areas; other duties as
assigned. (5%)
Assistant Librarian
Minimum Qualifications
ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and
Information Science/Studies and 3-5 years of experience.
Experience as a research and instruction librarian;
knowledge of library resources; successful growth in library
management and leadership; demonstrated supervisory experience;
excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree and 5 or more years of experience.
Experience coordinating a library instruction program,
experience with curricular development in a library context,
experience working with new information technologies
Associate Librarian
Minimum Qualifications
ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and
Information Science/Studies and 5-7 years of experience, 3 years or
more at the Assistant Librarian (or commensurate) level.
Demonstrated experience as a research and instruction
librarian; knowledge of library resources;successful growth
in library management and leadership; demonstrated supervisory
experience; excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
demonstrated excellence in scholarship and service.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.d and 7-10 years of experience.
Experience coordinating a library instruction program,
experience with curricular development in a library context,
experience working with new information technologies
