The primary purpose of the Education Outreach Specialist position is to work across Miami University (MU) with faculty, staff, and students in order to increase access and educational opportunities related to the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma (MTO), including its history, language, culture and art forms. This position will also support the Miami Tribe Relations Office within the Myaamia Center to promote the Tribe/University relationship and increase the national reach of this unique partnership. The Education Outreach Specialist will be responsible for:  1) Facilitating the development of curricular materials about the Miami Tribe to be taught in MU courses, including Global Miami Plan (GMP) and 2) Generating and disseminating content for promoting the MTO/MU relationship.  The Miami Tribe Relations office maintains communications with a variety of audiences including the Miami University Community, Miami Tribe of Oklahoma Community, Indian Country, Research Organizations and the general public.  This position will promote the relationship and be responsible for creating a plan for how to best communicate with all of these audiences.

Duties include and are not limited to:

Miami Tribe / Miami University Education:

  • Facilitate the development of educational material about the MTO/MU relationship that can be incorporated into Miami courses, with a focus on GMP courses
  • Engage with Miami faculty across disciplines to create new avenues for incorporating educational materials about the MTO/MU relationship into their courses
  • Serve as the primary contact for educational programming (class visits, presentations, co-curricular programs) around the MTO/MU relationship.
  • Serve as coordinator for study away, engaged learning, internships, and/or service-learning opportunities that engage Miami students in learning about the Miami Tribe

Outreach and Strategic Communications:

  • Develop an outreach and strategic communication plan to educate about the MTO/MU relationship, including the creation of communication standards, processes, and templates
  • Create and edit content for Miami Tribe Relations communications platforms, including website, social media, and printed resources.
  • Serve as a contact for partnership with Miami University Communications and Marketing (UCM) to promote the Miami Tribe Relations’ educational initiatives
  • Develop materials (website updates, class or public presentations, multimedia projects) that increase awareness and educate about the MTO/MU relationship
  • Maintain relationships with key partner offices at Miami University to advance educational initiatives of the Miami Tribe Relations office

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Providing support for co-curricular activities and programs of the Myaamia Center
  • Attending conferences for exposure to best practices

Travel – This position requires travel (some weekends) to participate in Myaamia community events that occur most often in Oklahoma or Indiana.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in education, public relations, strategic communications, journalism, marketing, technical communications, or related field conferred by the first day of employment. Team oriented, positive attitude, strong work ethic, open minded and flexible, culturally conscious, self-motivated, strong oral and written communication skills, willingness to expand self-learning, promptly responsive. Proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations, and specifically an understanding of Native American communities.  Occasional work on evenings and/or weekends.

This position is available to persons who are currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time and indefinite basis. (Persons authorized to work on such a basis include US citizens, lawful permanent residents (“green card” holders), asylees, refugees, and temporary residents under IRCA.) Relationship building, written and oral communication skills. Experience working in higher education.

Consideration may be given to candidates with two to four years of experience as an education or communications professional. Knowledge and/or experience working within a tribal context or handling tribal content in public educational settings. Knowledge or experience in Native American topics.
