Toxoplasma gondiiis a common HIV/AIDS-associated parasite that can cause fatale encephalitis. Natural infection byToxoplasmaoccurs via oral ingestion of parasite cysts. The project of Dr Viviana Pzsenny will be to study howToxoplasmasurvives in the harsh environment of the gut. To answer this question, this position will do lab research work at the bench.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design own experiments and protocols to work on mouse models and mammalian cells in culture infected with Toxoplasma.
  • Coordinate own objectives in the project and revise new directions if necessary.
  • Critical analysis of the data generated in the project.
  • In collaboration with Dr Coppens, write manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Collaborate with the Coppens lab members to implement new technologies, protocols and uses of equipment, and exchange ideas throughout regular interactions.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.
  • Four (4) years of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniquesrequired.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) with related graduate experience may substitute for one year of experience.For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience Similar to post-doctoral fellow working in a parasitology lab.
  • Independently, perform all research assays specific to research project.

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

  • Mouse infection and dissection/histology and bioluminescence imaging on mouse organs/expertise in molecular biology and microscopy techniques.
