General Summary/Purpose:

We are seeking to hire a full-time Sr. Biostatistician for The Center for Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis (CCTES). The Sr. Biostatistician will work with a multidisciplinary group on clinical trials and longitudinal other studies related to respiratory health. The Biostatistician will work with the American Lung Association Airways Clinical Research Centers (ALA-ACRC) Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and the RELIANCE DCC, which are both research projects at the Center for Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis. The ALA-ACRC Network is a multicenter group founded since 1999 to conduct clinical studies to improve the care of lung disease in diverse populations. The Network conducts randomized clinical trials and observational studies designed to evaluate a wide range of treatments for asthma and COPD. The current network activities in a national study of lung health and a clinical trial evaluating telehealth care. RELIANCE is a large pragmatic trial funded by PCORI designed to evaluate treatments for COPD.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Defining and maintaining an efficient computing and data environment which facilitates collaboration and secure access by a multidisciplinary team of faculty, staff, and trainees.
  • Integration and analysis of biodata from multiple sources, e.g., spirometry, actigraphy, multiple studies, and biobank datasets, including genomics, epigenetics, proteomics, metabolomics.Assisting in the interpretation and writing of statistical results for manuscripts and other reports.
  • Develop and implement complex statistical analysis plans for clinical trials and cohort studies, including Data and Safety Monitoring Plans.
  • Active collaboration with investigators of the ALA-ACRC and other groups to design analyses of study data for papers, grants, and presentations.
  • Collaboration with statisticians involved in other projects at the CCTES regarding study designs and analyses.
  • Implementation of novel analytic methods in collaboration with faculty in the Department of Biostatistics.
  • Participation in regular seminars and meetings of CCTES investigators.
  • Create and oversee implementation of quality assurance plans for new and ongoing studies.
  • Lead development and implementation of study reports for sponsors, regulators and other oversight bodies.
  • Lead development and implementation of data capture systems for new studies.
  • Oversee work of part-time biostatisticians.
  • Lead preparation of study reports, including manuscripts and presentations, and ensure complete and accurate data reporting.The ideal candidate for this position will have outstanding programming and organizational skills and the ability to learn and apply statistical algorithms to a range of datasets, as well as a strong interest in collaborative epidemiologic and biostatistics research.
  • A strong computing and mathematical background and the ability to learn new techniques rapidly incorporating innovative methods is a high priority.
  • Experience in the design and conduct of adaptive clinical trials is desired but not required.
  • The position will be based in the School of Public Health with the physical location in the Center for Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis.


Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, or related quantitative field required.
Three (3) years related experience required.
Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula: Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred 4 or more years of data analysis experience, requiring advanced skills with SAS or R.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in programing required; SAS, R, or an equivalent analysis program and the willingness to lear SAS or R rapidly.
  • Candidates should have excellent communication skills and collaborative research experience.
  • Experience in statistical analysis using SAS, R and/or other statistical or computing packages, e.g., STATA, is required.
  • Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: None beyond the experience with statistical software.

Starting Salary Range: $60,945.12 - $83,862.72 (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
