General Summary/Purpose

Under supervision of faculty members or a Principal Bioinformatician , the Bioinformatician willwork with investigators to tailor innovative sequencing approaches to their experiments and take each experiment from sequencing through analysis.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Use Linux, scripting languages, programming languages, and R to independently carry out bioinformatics/computational analyses and interpretation of complex, cutting-edge, high-dimensional genomic data sets generated by next generation sequencing instruments. Determine, research, and implement appropriate methodologic procedures for biologically informed, statistically and computationally driven analysis of high-dimensional data. Implement cutting-edge analytical methods and algorithms to delivery high quality analysis results. Communicate analytical results and details of computational analyses to faculty directors and collaborating investigators, creating scripts to generate reports for projects. Develop and document best practices for next generation sequencing analysis. Work with SKCCC Systems Administrators to maintain and update computer clusters, including computing and storage clusters. Develop and maintain cloud based computing systems as well as assist in maintaining the Linux computing cluster that supports sequencing data analysis. In performing duties, collaborate with the faculty that submit projects to the NGSC or to other high-throughput facilities. Use Linux, Perl/Python, and R scripts to support multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results in a timely manner. Keep up-to-date with published literature and new developments and technologies that will advance the mission of the GI Oncology faculty. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer sciences, related field

Minimum of 1 years of related experience required

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Expert knowledge of a programming language (such as Java, C or C++);


A scripting language (such as Perl or Python);

A statistical language (such as R); and Linux or UNIX

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
