Xavier’s Department of Biology invites applications for the position of Laboratory Support Services Manager. This position provides academically informed technical assistance to the Biology Department in order to ensure the successful teaching of laboratory courses, as well as faculty research, and related duties as needed.

This position collaborates with and provides appropriate support to faculty and other department personnel for instructional and research laboratories, preparing solutions and specimens, overseeing their deployment to and removal from curricular labs. They will also screen, hire, train, supervise and review student employees to assist in these tasks and in inventory management. Additionally, this person helps to manage the day-to-day operations of the Department of Biology, ordering of all preparatory, instructional and research laboratory supplies and maintaining of all inventories, as well as eventual disposal of assets. Finally, this person provides Environmental, Health and Safety support for the department, monitoring laboratory safety, chemical hazards, proper labeling, storage and waste precautions. Detailed record keeping is necessary.

Qualifications include: a M.S. degree in Biology or a closely-related field; the ability to work independently, creatively and collaboratively in an organized manner; the ability to prepare chemical solutions and sterile media; ability to use computerized systems of inventory, ordering and expense tracking; climb stairs; kneel, squat and lift up to 30 lbs. 3+ years work experience preferred. The work may at times require morning, evening or weekend hours. Opportunities to teach 1-2 college laboratory courses per term may be available for additional pay as adjunct faculty.
