Job Description

This is a temporary, non-benefited position to aid with macroinvertebrate sorting, identification, and counting.

Smith College uses freshwater macroinvertebrates in the Mill River as bioindicators for impacts of sediment redistribution in Paradise Pond. Macroinvertebrates were sampled from the river in June and September of 2020 and assistance is needed in sorting, identifying, and counting the preserved samples.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This work will require meticulous attention to detail and the ability to use a dissecting microscope and identification keys to sort, identify, and count macroinvertebrates. It is essential that protocols for using ethyl alcohol, general lab safety, and complying with regulations around Covid-19 (including bi-weekly testing provided by Smith College) are carefully followed. Data entry and quality checks will also be part of the work. Training will be provided on how to identify organisms and how to follow safety protocols, but previous experience working in a lab and using technical keys to identify organisms (especially for insects or macroinvertebrates) is desired.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree required. Previous experience working in a lab and with identifying organisms (especially macroinvertebrates) preferred.
