Position Function

The Director of Student and Young Alumni Philanthropy will join an award-winning and data inspired Strategy team at the Ball State University Foundation. The director will partner with colleagues in annual giving, donor relations, digital philanthropy and alumni engagement to develop a comprehensive plan to increase student and young alumni giving. Success in this position will lead to growth in the number of alumni donors under age 35 which serves as a pipeline to leadership annual giving and major giving in future years and campaigns.

The director holds great responsibility for partnering across the Foundation and University to increase giving among Ball State’s largest group of alumni.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience

Three or more years of demonstrated successful, professional experience in fundraising, student affairs, alumni relations, marketing or a related field; some project management experience; some experience developing and implementing communication strategies; some supervisory experience.

Minimum Other

Broad understanding of marketing, engagement and philanthropy by generation, including writing, messaging and social media; sincere commitment to collaborative work with colleagues; approach responsibilities in creative and innovative ways; excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.

Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Master’s degree.

Preferred Experience

Additional years of related experience; undergraduate involvement in student activities, employment as a student caller/ambassador or the like; experience with creating digital and social media content; efficient in the use of Raiser’s Edge and/or Fundraising Performance Management

Develop and implement an integrated strategic plan for student and young alumni philanthropy which creates a pipeline for future Foundation and alumni volunteers, leadership annual giving and major giving prospects; broaden awareness of philanthropy among the student base; outline communication tactics and plans related to direct mail, text, phone, video and social media.

Recruit, retain and lead the Philanthropy Education Council, including its executive slate; attend meetings involving the Council; work with the group to establish student focused activities for One Ball State Day that increase awareness and giving from this constituency; partner with donor relations and the Council on the Foundation’s annual Thank a Donor Day.

Develop and execute an annual Top 100 student awards program with the assistance of the Philanthropy Education Council; engage University and Foundation partners on program formulation, nominations, selection, event planning and long-term engagement; outline and monitor annual goals to show growth from this group as it relates to volunteerism and donor moves management.

Develop a comprehensive social media strategy for students and young alumni in partnership with strategy team colleagues; oversee Instagram and TikTok strategies, content and writing for these audiences; play an active role in the overall social media strategy for the Foundation; build a social ambassador network of students and young alumni with a goal of retaining and growing the list annually.

Increase the number of students and young alumni giving (and giving monthly) to Ball State annually; speak into strategies for growing the number of monthly recurring donors from this generation of constituents.

Develop and maintain relationships with alumni engagement and the office of Student Life; seek out partnerships across the University as it relates to student and young alumni philanthropy; serve as a liaison to the Young Alumni Council, attend meetings and present on student and young alumni philanthropy.

Identify outstanding students who will represent Ball State in print, video, digital assets and more for the Foundation. Partner with strategy colleagues to vet the students and arrange appointments.
