Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Student Support Services ( SSS ) and the Advising Coordinator, the Student Support Services Advisor will provide academic, personal, career, and financial assessment and advising to SSS eligible students. This includes first generation, low income and students with disabilities. The position serves as a campus liaison with other academic departments and committees to address at risk student issues. This position works closely with the Advisor Coordinator.
This is a 10-month full time position, with the months of July and August off.
Required Qualifications
• BA/BS in counseling, education, vocational rehabilitation or related degree.
• Experience in advising, counseling or teaching students.
Preferred Qualifications
• Masters in counseling, education, vocational rehabilitation or related field.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in advising, counseling or teaching at the post-secondary level.
• Knowledge or experience working in TRIO .
• Knowledge or experience with first generation, low income, and students with disabilities.
• Experience creating workshops or developmental opportunities related to career development and career readiness.
• Facilitating & empowering students.
• Familiarity with retention issues.
• Additional training & study.

• Normal hours are 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening or weekend commitment.

This position is grant funded. Grant funded positions are contingent on continued funding of the grant. Grant funding changes can occur at any time. This position may be eliminated, or the percentage of appointment reduced, as a result of grant funding changes.

Assess, Advise, and Refer Students
Duties to Support Responsibility
• Assess the academic, personal, career and financial needs of 140 first generation, low income and students with disabilities through the use of student interviews and from referencing referral information and recommendations.
• Provide academic, personal, career and financial developmental advising to 140 first generation, low income and students with disabilities.
• Interpret academic policies, procedures and resources including General Education, major, minor, program and degree requirements.
• Assist students with selection of classes and registration including the use of WINGS (UW-L Student Information System) and EAB Navigate ( UWL Student Success System).
• Refer students to the SSS Math Specialist, English and Science peer tutors and other tutoring resources on campus.
• Serve as a liaison with UW-L faculty, staff, parents and school officials.
• Refer students to academic, personal, career and financial resources on and off campus.

• Outreach to new students into SSS by participating in campus events including the Office of Residence Life fair, Campus Close-ups, Upward Bound tours and Involvement Fest.

• Represent SSS at various staff, sub-division, division and campus meetings and events.
