Mission or Goal of Unit
The Special Education programs in the VCU School of Education prepare graduate students with knowledge in evidence-based practice and inclusive education, skills in intervention research leading to effective strategies, evidence-based special education teacher education preparation, and dispositions in serving young children and students with or without disabilities from diverse communities through systematic training in research, teaching, and service.
Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal
The faculty member will be responsible for: (1) conducting and maintaining a clear and systematic line of research that leads to publishing peer-reviewed articles, presenting at conferences, securing external funding, enhancing the program’s national and international reputation; (2) teaching, supervising, and advising in the Special Education-General Education program at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral level, chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees; and (3) providing service to the program, department, school, university, and Special Education profession. We are encouraging applicants with professional experience and expertise in working with children and youth with mild to moderate disabilities. Special consideration will be given to candidates with an expertise in core academic subject matters utilizing inclusive practices, autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, and early childhood education. We invite faculty candidates whose education and professional experience and/or interests include an emphasis on urban education and commitment to advancing access, equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve them.
The selected faculty member will have a clear potential for external funding to support research efforts. At VCU, we believe different perspectives and expertise enhance possibilities and solutions. Teach undergraduate, graduate (masters and doctoral) courses in the special education general programs and the Ph.D. in Special Education program; advise and mentor graduate students; recruit students for admission to graduate programs; develop and implement policies and procedures related to the special education general programs and the doctoral program in special education. Serving and chairing doctoral dissertation committees are considered an aspect of teaching responsibilities.
Develop and implement a research agenda related to area of expertise to include presenting work of projects through publications and at national, regional, and state conferences. Research includes seeking and obtaining internal and external grant funding of research projects.
Provide meaningful service to the community through participating in department, school, and/or university committees as well as collaborating with community partners and to the profession locally. Assist in coordinating special education general programs, which includes program group meetings, policy development, curricular and/or assessment improvement efforts, respond to initial inquiries about program requirements and/or admission, review applications, and/or engaging community partners.
•An earned doctorate in special education, or closely related field;
•Promise or record of external funding to support research;
•An innovative and impactful research agenda that has strong potential for external funding;
•Commitment to mentoring doctoral students and serving on dissertation committees;
•Teaching at the university level;
•Clear evidence of special education professional identity;
•Experience conducting research related to or within urban settings with individuals in our communities who have been historically marginalized and done from a culturally responsive lens;
•Demonstrated research, scholarship, and practice in advancing access, equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve them; and
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .
•Demonstrated work (e.g. practice, research, and/or scholarship) in advancing access, equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve them;
•Evidence of community-engaged research, training, and experience;
•Content expertise in working with children and youth with mild to moderate disabilities. Special consideration will be given to candidates with an expertise in and expertise in core academic subject matters utilizing inclusive practices, autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, and early childhood education;
•Engagement with/or leadership in professional organizations;
•Clinical supervision experience;
•Evidence of research alignment with the Partnership for People with Disabilities or other School of Education Centers.
