The Hourly Admissions Counselor position is a temporary seasonal position in the Office of Admissions responsible for the recruitment of undergraduate students. Averaging 29 hours a week (more in the busy season), the Hourly Admissions Counselor serves as a university liaison, providing customer service and information about the university to prospective undergraduate students and other constituencies. Performs recruitment and marketing duties for the Office of Admissions and represents the university at special events such as receptions and open houses. Conducts information sessions and counseling sessions with prospective undergraduate students about the university, admissions processes, and university policies and procedures. Follows detailed instructions. Coordinates and implements recruitment strategies to attract new undergraduates and works closely with other university offices. Responds to email and participates in chat sessions, makes phone calls to prospective students and other e- marketing activities. In response to COVID -19 regulations from the state and the university, virtual visits and events are being conducted in place of in-person travel. However, once COVID restrictions are removed, this position would travel extensively, including evenings and weekends, to actively recruit new students from both in-state and out-of-state. Travel includes attending college fairs, career fairs, visits to high schools and community colleges, and other duties as assigned. As mentioned previously, most of these events (fairs, visits, and presentations) are being conducted in a virtual environment at this time. Evening and weekend work required at other times on and off campus.

Required Qualifications

-Some experience in higher education, admissions, administrative or customer-service related areas.
-Demonstrated excellence in public contact and customer service experience.
-Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as, in a team setting.
-Previous experience with public speaking; strong comfort level with making presentations to large groups of people.
-Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
-Excellent critical thinking skills.
-Ability to work in and with a diverse population is required.
-Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be flexible.
-Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Access, or equivalent word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
-Valid Driver’s License and current car insurance.
-Travels extensively, including evenings and weekends, to actively recruit new students from both in-state and out-of-state. (In response to COVID -19, all travel is being conducted virtually at this time. Subject to change following guidance from state and university officials).
-Evening and weekend work also required at other times on and off campus.
-Some light lifting required, less than 20 pounds.
-Ability to work in a diverse environment.

Preferred Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent applicable experience or training and experience in college admissions preferred.
-Extensive knowledge of VCU programs.
-Experience in compiling, preparing and analyzing data for reports.
-Experience with student information systems and imaging software.
