THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Statistics and Biostatistics offers an undergraduate degree in Statistics and a BS in Statistics with a Data Science concentration, two post-baccalaureate certificates (in applied or theoretical statistics), and master’s degrees in both Statistics and Biostatistics. The Statistics MS degree offers four concentrations (Actuarial, Applied, Data Science, and Mathematical Statistics).
The Department also teaches basic statistics courses for many major programs throughout the University. The concentrations in the MS Statistics program allow students to customize their program specific to their career goals. The MS programs focus largely on applications and methodology. The courses are designed to prepare students for employment in the large and diverse Bay Area job market for analytics, statistics and biostatistics, as well as for employment opportunities nationwide. Our programs are flexible enough to allow students to prepare for Ph.D. programs, including at major research universities.
The department is composed of engaged faculty who strive for excellence in both teaching and research. Faculty are welcoming and extremely supportive of one another. Our programs are designed for a diverse student population with a diverse set of goals, whether it be to join the workforce or continue their education at the graduate level.
As of Fall 2019, there are 34 undergraduate majors (including double majors) and minors, about 122 statistics MS majors and 22 biostatistics MS majors. Many alumni continue their ties with the Department, often recruiting current students for job openings or providing advice about curriculum development. The members of our faculty are devoted to teaching, involved in University affairs, maintain active research programs, and actively participate in local and national statistics professional societies. Faculty expertise covers a broad range including applied statistics, data science, computational statistics, Bayesian statistics, time series, statistics education, and biostatistics. University computer labs are well-equipped, with access to R, RStudio, Python, SAS®, Tableau, JMP®, MINITAB®, and SPSS®, and allow students to program using full versions of statistical software packages often used in the market. Applied courses include extensive computer use; elementary and major courses meet in a computer lab at least a few times a semester. The class size for elementary statistics courses required by other majors is approximately 50 students. Classes for statistics undergraduate majors and minors are generally far smaller in size. The size of required master’s-level courses varies from 15 to 35 students. Summer courses may be offered on specialized topics. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The areas of application we seek are: Data Science, Data Visualization, Computational Statistics, and Biostatistics.
Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to the department’s programs in the areas of statistics and data science. We also seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include developing effective pedagogies for teaching introductory statistics courses to serve students with diverse backgrounds.
Duties of the position include teaching undergraduate and master’s level students in statistics and data science. Undergraduate teaching includes service and general education courses, as well as major and minor courses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the Department with administrative and committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Faculty members teach, mentor, and advise an ethnically diverse student body. Faculty members maintain active research programs, oversee student research and consulting activities, and assist in preparing and administering the Comprehensive Examination for the MS degrees (given twice every year). We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor, Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.
