The University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) seeks an innovative, dynamic, and student-centered Faculty Lecturer to direct the Academic Fellows Program (AFP), which serves the approximately 2000 SBS undergraduate students who identify as first-generation, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), and/or from families with low incomes. The goals of AFP are to ensure equity; foster a sense of belonging and community; provide holistic support for students’ academic, professional development, civic, and personal pursuits; and close the opportunity gap for historically marginalized students.

The Lecturer/Director will teach two courses per semester, including an Integrative Experience (IE) course and a team-based-learning (TBL) course, and will serve as a faculty mentor and sponsor for senior theses, independent studies, and internships. Teaching assignments may also include a research seminar, an advanced transfer student seminar, a cohort-based internship seminar, or a first-year seminar. Working with the Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion, the Lecturer/Director will serve as a faculty liaison to SBS departments and to student groups working on issues of undergraduate diversity, equity, and inclusion. In collaboration with other SBS Student Success Team members, students, and campus partners, the Lecturer/Director will develop and promote high-impact opportunities (e.g., mentoring networks, Alternative Spring Break, internships, peer leadership positions); mentor students and hold weekly office hours; teach and supervise Diversity Fellows peer interns; develop and consult regularly with an AFP Advisory Board; set program goals and develop a comprehensive assessment plan; work with the SBS Development Team to advance fundraising goals to support the program; and plan events and other mechanisms to foster community, enable students to share their perspectives and concerns, and support students’ exploration and pursuit of their academic and career goals. Importantly, the Lecturer/Director will not only teach and work closely with those students who choose to identify and engage deeply with the program, but also work with other faculty members, students, and staff to develop strategies for providing broad-scale outreach and teaching and learning resources to help close the opportunity gap for all AFP-eligible students across the College. As a member of the SBS Student Success Team, the Lecturer/Director’s work is informed by, and contributes to, SBS Pathways, the College’s leading-edge, proactive student success, advising, and curriculum model.

Candidates must have a strong commitment to racial justice, equity, and inclusion and an appreciation for linkages among academic, experiential, and professional development in building student success. A commitment to excellence in teaching is expected, and experience working as part of a student success or advocacy team is desirable. This position will be housed either in the Department of Communication or the Department of Sociology depending on the candidate’s credentials.  However, the AFP Director will report to the SBS Senior Associate Dean for Education and Student Development in the SBS Dean’s Office.

While new University lecturer appointments are initially for one year with the possibility of renewal, the College is deeply invested in AFP and its future director and envisions this a permanent appointment contingent upon strong performance and available funding.

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences serves 5,000 undergraduate majors in Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Journalism, Landscape Architecture, Legal Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, Resource Economics, Sociology, Social Thought and Political Economy, Sustainable Community Development, and the SBS Exploratory Track.

Requirements:

  • A Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or social science discipline or related field is required. Ed.D./Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Candidates for the position must have experience working with underrepresented college students and a demonstrated commitment to racial justice, equity, inclusion, and student wellness.
  • Candidates must have strong teaching skills; an ability to develop and teach new courses related to social justice leadership and advocacy, and a whole-student approach to teaching and learning.
  • Candidates must have strong interpersonal, collaboration, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching, mentoring, advocacy, and program design.
  • Experience with planning and/or facilitating events or other programs is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working as part of a student success or advocacy team is preferred.
