Vice President for Enrollment Management

Following the July 1, 2020, appointment of noted educator, student-affairs leader and diversity, equity and inclusion champion Lori S. White as President, DePauw University seeks a new Vice President for Enrollment Management who will play a key role in the renewal of this top-50 national liberal arts college that has an outsized influence in its region.

Thirty-nine miles from Indianapolis, DePauw is the leading national liberal college in Indiana, enrolling 1752 undergraduates in the fall of 2020 on an idyllic 655-acre campus that is 99% residential, with a student-faculty ratio of 9-1 and a $730 million endowment. Always providing higher education focused on the future, DePauw has historically attracted the children of, and been an incubator for, civic, business and cultural leaders in the state, while also drawing a national and international enrollment. During the past decade, DePauw has significantly diversified its student body—23% are domestic students of color and 20% are first-generation. A high priority of the new strategic plan will be delivering on the promises that DePauw makes to all matriculants and enhancing student satisfaction and success, especially for students from historically underrepresented groups.

DePauw links robust liberal arts and musical performance (through the School of Music) curricular offerings with extensive experiential and pre-professional learning opportunities. Top students can apply to five programs of distinction: Honors Scholars, Management Fellows, Media Fellows, Science Research Fellows, 21CM (21st Century Musicians) or Information Technology Associates, each with its own set of benefits and hands-on experiences. Highly competitive Division III athletics and DePauw’s historic Greek system, among the strongest in the country, are significant admissions and retention drivers, cultivating affinity among students with differing curricular interests and individual, intersectional identities.

Reporting to President White, and an essential member of the President’s Cabinet that determines the University’s strategic direction, the new Vice President will lead DePauw’s efforts to recruit and enroll an academically strong and diverse student body, while also overseeing financial aid and working with faculty and other administrators to improve first-year retention (which currently stands at 91%). Supervising a staff of 23, including 17 admissions and six financial aid officers, the new Vice President will institute a culture of strategic enrollment management, eliciting from DePauw constituents a consistent marketing identity for the University and articulating roles for alumni, faculty, students and staff to support the University’s recruiting and enrollment objectives. The new Vice President will be called upon to position DePauw to regain ground and compete more effectively with public and private institutions in its region and to create broader awareness of the University’s excellence in geographic regions beyond its traditional strongholds.

Qualifications: Candidates should evidence a record of senior leadership within a recruiting-and-retention oriented national liberal arts institution that has succeeded in strengthening its enrollment profile by growing applications and increasing yield. Successful experience in more than one institution is preferred. The new Vice President must be able to articulate the value proposition of DePauw’s arts-and-sciences and School of Music curricula and the educational benefits of an intimately scaled residential-college community in a rural setting with access to a major city. Technical sophistication, familiarity with enrollment analytics and expertise in financial aid leveraging strategies that afford access and reward talent are essential. Experience in recruiting undergraduates from the Midwest region would be advantageous. DePauw expects the new Vice President to be, or soon to become, an acknowledged national authority and spokesperson on college admission and financial aid issues, with a professional reputation for affability, who can further substantiate the University’s relationships in the media and the college admissions counseling field.

Review of candidate materials will begin immediately and continue until the appointment. A complete application will include a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae and contact information for five professional references who can speak about the candidate’s qualifications for this appointment. Named referees will not be contacted without the candidate’s prior consent. Expressions of interest, nominations and inquiries should be directed to DePauw’s search consultant, Mr. Chuck O’Boyle of C. V. O’Boyle, Jr, LLC, at chuck@cvoboyle.com.

DePauw University is an equal opportunity employer committed to attracting and retaining highly qualified individuals who collectively reflect the diversity of the nation. No applicant shall be discriminated against on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, marital status, religion, creed or disability.
