Director, Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars Program

Overview

The Director oversees the Martin Luther King (MLK), Jr. Scholars Program. This immersive, cohort-based honors program provides a select group of students with necessary knowledge, skills, and relationships to advance social justice and social change, with a specific focus on anti-racism, poverty, and violence – what Dr. King called the three evils of society. Through intentionally designed experiences in and out of the classroom, the Director will support the learning, growth, and development of the MLK, Jr. Scholars as they work together to realize Dr. King's vision of a beloved community at New York University and beyond. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Success and the Student Experience, and working in partnership with the Associate Vice President for Global Engagement and Inclusive Leadership, the Director is responsible for curriculum and program design, operations and staff, budgets, communications, and the strategic direction and evaluation of program goals and student outcomes. The Director collaborates with the leadership team in Student Success, as well as key partners in the Office of Global Inclusion, faculty, and colleagues in the schools to deliver a four-year programming and educational model. The Director supervises a team of full-time staff and graduate assistants, and leads faculty and community advisory boards that support the success of the program and its students.

Responsibilities
Required Education:
Master's Degree

Preferred Education:
Master's Degree in higher education, social justice education, leadership studies, or relevant social science

Required Experience:
7+ years progressively responsible professional experience working in a university, educational institution, or youth development program; Substantive experience in program or curriculum development and implementation; Experience with social justice education and programming; Experience managing and supervising professional or student staff.

Preferred Experience:
Knowledge of the range of social justice, social change, and equity-based theories and models, and the means by which to assess those theories and models in practice; An understanding of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr; Knowledge of student develop theories, with a broad understanding of student success literature (academic and co-curricular); Experience designing and implementing outcomes-based curriculum, as well as academic and scholarship-based programs; Experience building and sustaining faculty partnerships, and working closely with faculty to meet program outcomes; Experience leading cohorts and teams in a higher education setting; Experience creating new programs or initiatives with associated measures for success.
