DANE A. MILLER HEAD AND PROFESSOR WELDON SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

Purdue University is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader to serve as the Dane A. Miller Head of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. Purdue’s Biomedical Engineering (BME) program started as a research center focused on medical device innovations in 1974, and in 1998 developed into the first new engineering academic department at Purdue in over 40 years. In 2001, the BME department became the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, the first named school in Purdue Engineering. Today, the Weldon School has grown to over 500 students, 30 primary faculty, 30 affiliated faculty, 1500 program alumni, with 100,000 ft2of laboratory space, $15 million of annual extramural funding, and an MD/PhD program with Indiana University School of Medicine.  The Weldon School has a long history of excellence and collaboration with industry to bring impactful innovations in healthcare from research to patient use. Our fundamental research, education, and translation missions have resulted in 100 US patents, $30 million in licensing royalties, 25 start-up companies, and extramural funding from NIH, NSF, DOD and other sources, impacting 3 million patients worldwide and providing a unique and diverse experiential learning environment for both undergraduate and graduate education. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to be a part of the Purdue community, the fifth most innovative university in America by US News & World Report. They will also lead the Weldon School as the leader in translational medicine and biomedical engineering while advancing the diversity of the School’s outstanding students, faculty, and staff.

We seek a visionary leader with superior interpersonal and communications skills; a collaborative mindset; experience in administrative/resource management, team building and mentoring, building relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni and industry partners; and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Successful applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or related discipline and meet the qualifications for appointment at the full professor level with tenure, as evidenced by a substantial record of independent and peer reviewed research, scholarly work, teaching, and professional service.

The successful candidate will have a distinguished record as an educator and as a collaborator with clinical and industry partners on research at the intersection of engineering and medicine that demonstrates an understanding of the current needs and future direction of the biomedical engineering profession and will teach as appropriate.
