General Summary/Purpose

The Patient Service Coordinator (PSC)/ Medical Assistant (MA) will work at the Baltimore City Health Department assisting with the care of TB/HIV/STD patients. The ability to work in a culturally diverse environment within a team and to provide public health services within the community; including Spanish fluency, phlebotomy, and office duties.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Schedule latent tuberculosis (TB) patients, contacts to active TB cases and /or B-waivers (immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers) for laboratory tests, radiology tests, and medical examinations. Relay information to patients regarding preparation for laboratory tests and examinations. Coordinate visits either within the department or between several departments, to include TB/HIV/STD.
  • Telephone and interview patients and/or family members to obtain accurate pre-registration information and to confirm appointments. Verify and enter pre-registration and insurance information into the computer system and prepare daily printed schedules for the latent TB clinic. Obtain or verify patients’ demographic data by phone or in person. Fill vacancies due to cancellations. Obtain pre-certifications as required by patients' health care insurers or managed care providers. Register patients for clinical appointments using computerized database. Assist in arranging patient transportation. Answer phones and provide routine information to callers.
  • Cross train in the TB/HIV/STD clinics to be able to work in all clinics. May need to rotate between the TB and HIV/STD departments. Fulfill HIPAA compliant ingoing and outgoing medical records requests. Manage incoming and outgoing faxes. Provide accurate appointment check-in and check-out.
  • Cross train with the active TB Medical Office Assistant (MOA) for aid in coverage of the entire program.
  • Conducts contact investigations in the field or in site visits within the community, with the assistance of the TB nurses.
  • Perform phlebotomy and/or injections either in the office or in the field. These tests to include purified protein derivative (PPD) testing and/or QuantiFERON (QFT+) testing, HIV testing, syphilis testing, sputum collection, urine tests, point of care testing (POCT) for pregnancy, routine labs and perform electrocardiogram (EKG) tests. Communicate findings to the TB prevention nurse who will oversee the TB prevention program and communicate any programmatic issues to the TB program coordinator.
  • Collect data from patients regarding their medical history, obtain vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Display responsible behaviors, communicate effectively to others and function as a member of the healthcare team. Function under the direct supervision and report to the TB program coordinator, who is responsible for administrative supervision, staff development, and orientation of the PSC/MA to the area's policies and procedures. Demonstrate fluency in Spanish and competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care.
  • Maintain an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies. Assist in the organization of efficient patient flow. Organize the clinic environment to assure patient safety. Demonstrate problem-solving skills as they relate to patient care activities. Provide guidance for and act as a role model for other PSC/MAs in the clinical area.
  • Act as a care navigator for patients that do not speak English. Patients may need referrals for other social/mental needs within the community.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well within a small team environment.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

High School Diploma/GED.

  • One- year work experience in a similar service-oriented industry required.
  • Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, and NAHP) required
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during duration of employment in this position
  • Must be fluent in both English and Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications

Phlebotomy and the ability to administer IM injections. Flexible work hours as needed.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge and interest in TB/HIV/STD diseases.

Knowledge and interest in public health aspects of infectious disease control.

Ability to work with culturally diverse patients, staff and community populations.

Ability to work in multidisciplinary, multi-organizational team setting.

The ability to be comfortable working within the community of Baltimore City.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through.

Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Phlebotomy skills; the ability to administer IM injections.

Proficiency in medical and conversational Spanish is required.
Reliable transportation.
