General Summary/Purpose

Responsible for the management of professional fee billing and other processes necessary to the success of the business unit including oversight of subordinate manager and supervisor responsibilities. Provide leadership and encouragement to support University and departmental policies and initiatives. Monitor and analyze staff productivity, reimbursement patterns, practice results and makes recommendations to enhance clinical revenues. Position requires analytical thinking, ingenuity and planning skills. Maintain strict confidentiality of staff and patient information.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Procedural Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of Assistant PUM roles and responsibilities.
  • Responsible for the management of professional fee billing and collection which may include coding, charge capture, charge entry, claims processing, insurance payment posting and insurance accounts receivables follow-up and other processes necessary to the success of the business unit including oversight of subordinate manager and supervisor responsibilities.
  • Provide leadership to subordinate staff and encourage staff to support both current and proposed University and departmental policies and initiatives.
  • Monitor and analyze staff productivity, reimbursement patterns, practice results and makes recommendations to enhance clinical revenues.
  • Broad scope of responsibility, which requires analytical thinking, ingenuity and planning skills to promote team actions and results.
  • Assure that reimbursements of professional health care services sought from third party payers are justified and appropriate, in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Monitor staff orientation and continuing education programs.
  • Require appropriate medical record and billing training for any staff found to be in non-compliance as determined through the Office of Billing Quality Assurance sampling or departmental reviews.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the internal and external compliance audit program for professional fee billing and medical record documentation.
  • Analyze billing data, develop accounts receivable performance targets and devise action plans necessary to attain goals.
  • Interface with Information Technology personnel assigned to computer system maintenance regarding unprinted claims, dictionary maintenance, ad-hoc reporting requests, and electronic tape submissions.
  • Monitor processing of Medicare and Blue Shield Acknowledgement reports and take corrective action as required or needed.
  • Serve as departmental representative on various committees.
  • Provide oversight over several functional areas as identified by the Production Unit Manager.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Utilize online resources including EPIC/Availity to facilitate efficient claims processing.
  • Requires a thorough understanding of medical billing and the unique customer service requirements as related to patients, physicians and administrative staff in a high volume medical services environment.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills with the ability to work well under pressure.

  • Assist in the training of staff.
  • Keep current of industry changes by reading assigned material on work related topics.
  • Complete three days of training annually.

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Occasional attendance at divisional meetings to share information requested by providers/leadership.
  • Participation in/Direction of monthly A/R Staff & Coding Staff Meetings.
  • Other responsibilities assigned on an as needed basis to facilitate consistently high quality & throughput in all aspects of production unit business.

Minimum Qualifications

  • . Bachelor’s degree in health care administration, business, or related discipline required.
  • CPC certification preferred.
  • Three years progressively responsible professional level experience in a physician’s group practice environment which includes two years supervisory experience required.
Additional job related experience beyond minimum experience qualifications may substitute for formal education requirement to extent permitted by JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
