Job Description Summary

Position: The McWhorter School of Building Science at Auburn University seeks applications for a full-time, tenure track faculty position at the assistant/associate professor level. The vision of the McWhorter School of Building Science is to be the global leader in education and innovation in the built environment. The mission is to create stimulating learning experiences for our students by engaging them in the discovery of the techniques and management of construction.

Position Description: We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative, creative and committed faculty who will contribute to our vision and mission. The candidate chosen should be willing to engage in innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching, research and outreach activities by forming strong relationships with students, faculty, alumni, industry, and other academic and professional institutions.

Applicants should be prepared to teach in one or more of the following areas of need: Materials and Methods, Construction Informatics, Construction Safety, Pre-fabrication/Offsite Construction, Contracting Business, and Quality Management. Applicants who can teach emerging and/or interdisciplinary topics in the built environment are also encouraged to apply.

The selected candidate will have instructional opportunities in the thriving undergraduate program, the Master of Building Construction program, and the newly established Building Construction Doctoral program. Some of our faculty members also develop and deliver instruction in the three online Graduate Building Construction Certificate Programs as well as the executive Master of Real Estate program, a joint-program of the College of Business and the College of Architecture, Design and Construction. Several faculty members are involved in the school’s very-active Study-Abroad program. Many of our faculty members are engaged in the school’s Center for Construction Innovation and Collaboration and the development of innovative products, all in pursuit of their interests and ideas (http://www.auburnccic.org).

Duties: Successful candidate is expected to:
1. Teach undergraduate, graduate, distance learning, and/or hands-on courses. Opportunities to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate electives are available. Full list of courses can be found on our website: https://cadc.auburn.edu/construction/.
2. Pursue scholarship of teaching and/or research and/or outreach in accordance with the University mission.
3. Direct graduate students in completion of their research by participating as a ‘committee chair’ and/or ‘committee member’.
4. Work with student organizations and/or mentor student competition teams.
5. Maintain active membership in professional organizations.
6. Collaborate with other disciplines and interact with the industry.
7. Participate in service activities in support of the university and school mission.

School Description: The McWhorter School of Building Science ( BSCI ), established in 1947, is the second oldest construction education program in the United States. BSCI maintains a proud tradition of practical and professional construction education, offering an undergraduate degree in Building Construction, a Master’s Degree in Building Construction; and a PhD in Building Construction. BSCI is an active member of the Associated Schools of Construction ( ASC ) and is fully accredited by the American Council for Construction Education ( ACCE ). The McWhorter School is a part of the College of Architecture, Design and Construction, hence offering opportunities for collaboration. The School has 20 full-time faculty members with a student population of about 500. It has six named professorships and one endowed chair, all generously supported by alumni. The McWhorter School of Building Science has more than 4,000 alumni, including many who lead the industry in Engineering News Record’s top ranked firms.

The construction industry and BSCI alumni are extremely supportive of the School and its activities. The School has a unique Construction Industry Fund, supported by contractors’ licensing fees since 1992, that supports research for the construction industry, program enhancement, faculty development and continuing education. Substantial recurring funds have been committed to support the school in its mission to deliver the highest quality construction education. The dedicated 36,000sf LEED® Gold rated M. Miller Gorrie Center completed in 2007 was the result of industry and alumni generosity and leadership. The School has significant endowment funds that also support research and program enhancement. Recently, the school has received a gift that is dedicated to foster student engagement with service learning.

The school is a leader in exploring Information and Visualization technologies applications in construction and construction education, working with industry leaders in seeking solutions to construction industry challenges, creating collaboration opportunities between disciplines, and maintaining outreach activities and providing study abroad opportunities for faculty and students.

The M. Miller and Frances Gorrie Construction Visualization lab is recently established to provide an interactive virtual teaching and learning environment to the faculty and students (https://cadc.auburn.edu/m-miller-and-frances-gorrie-construction-visualization-laboratory/). The newly renovated Robins & Morton Construction Field Lab is available for hands-on instructions, service learning, and research.

The school maintains an active study abroad program for undergraduate and graduate students. This program helps our students to have an awareness of construction on a global scale while exposing them to other cultures. Approximately 25% of our students gain an international experience before they graduate.

Salary: Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and based on a nine-month academic year. The McWhorter School of Building Science maintains an aggressive summer program for graduate and undergraduate students, and summer teaching positions are available. Faculty members are provided a substantial travel budget to encourage participation in professional and academic endeavors.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
1. A Master’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field or a Bachelor degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field with a Master of Business Administration at the time employment begins.
2. A minimum of three years appropriate experience in the US construction industry. Significant construction research experience involving direct interaction/work with the construction industry may be considered as a substitute.
3. Evidence of excellent communication skills.

1. A Ph.D. degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field (Applicants with an ABD will be considered if they can finish the degree within 2 years of appointment).
2. A minimum of five years US construction experience.
3. Prior teaching experience at the university level.
4. Evidence of strong scholarship (e.g. publications, research grants, outreach, etc.).
5. Advanced education, certification, professional registration, licensure, or other relevant credentials.
