Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs – Learning and Improvement leads broad efforts across Student Affairs and the campus to ensure Student Affairs interactions and experiences provide the maximum benefit to students and the UGA community.
This position provides strategic vision and leadership for co-curricular learning and essential skill development for students through Student Affairs. The Assistant to the VP works closely with Student Affairs departments and staff to maximize student participation and enhance existing programs, engaging students in higher levels of learning and development. The position also leads assessment and reporting efforts for Student Affairs, collaborating broadly on institutional accreditation ( SACSCOC ) and data initiatives. This role oversees and supports staff in assessing student learning, department learning and operational outcomes, and student perspectives.
Across campus, the Assistant to the VP leads efforts to integrate Student Affairs co-curricular learning with Academic Affairs and the campus, including overseeing the University’s Experiential Learning initiative in Student Affairs. The position advances strategic relationships with influential faculty and academic leaders, serving as a campus expert and resource for Student Affairs and co-curricular learning.
The Assistant to the VP advises and collaborates broadly with the Chief of Staff and other senior leaders in defining and recommending opportunities for continuous improvement in Student Affairs. The role serves as a core member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs ( OVPSA ).
• Master’s degree in education, higher education/student affairs, counseling, or related discipline
• Five years of experience working in a higher education or related setting
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
• Terminal degree in a related discipline
• Seven to ten years of increasing levels of leadership working in a higher education or related setting
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects, ideally in a higher education setting
• Sound knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and a background that includes using SoTL to design and facilitate co-curricular experiences
• Demonstrated background that includes staff upskilling, training, and development
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Excellent listening and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of administrators, faculty, students, parents, and community stakeholders
• Broad-based knowledge of student affairs functions at a large public institution

Provide strategic vision and leadership for co-curricular learning and essential skill development for students through Student Affairs (35%)
• Promote the Student Affairs essential skills among students and across the campus.
• Assure the integration of skill development into all relevant learning experiences across Student Affairs.
• Advance learning technologies and other systems in Student Affairs to promote and track essential skill development and articulation.
• Lead Student Affairs departments and develop staff to design, facilitate, assess, align, improve, innovate, and build capacity of learning experiences.
• Oversee the Student Affairs Learning Collaborative group.
• Define and promote robust, accessible student pathways for co-curricular learning and development of essential skills.
• Lead implementation of the University’s Experiential Learning initiative in Student Affairs.
• Provide and oversee direct student engagement opportunities related to essential skills development, including student coaching, courses, workshops, and other learning experiences.
Percentage Of Time 35 Duties/Responsibilities
Lead assessment and reporting efforts for Student Affairs (25%)
• Regularly assess student learning and development across Student Affairs.
• Oversee assessment of departmental learning and operational outcomes across Student Affairs.
• Ensure effective departmental assessment planning.
• Leverage assessment efforts in Student Affairs budget request and annual reporting processes.
• Serve as a resource to Student Affairs staff and the university community on assessment and research practices and activities.
• Partner in broad-based data initiatives in Student Affairs, working to improve data collection, analysis, and utilization.
• Support division staff in the development and implementation of department-based assessment projects and instruments.
• Plan, coordinate, and conduct studies on student behaviors, satisfaction, retention and attitudes related to Student Affairs and institutional goals.
• Facilitate the Student Affairs research initiative and research activities studying students or Student Affairs.
• Partner in campus-wide efforts to affirm the University’s accreditation through SACSCOC .
• Coordinate Student Affairs reporting on assessment and research efforts to Student Affairs leaders, institutional partners, and other members of the campus community.

Integrate Student Affairs co-curricular learning efforts with Academic Affairs and the campus (20%)
• Collaborate closely with campus offices engaged in co-curricular learning, including the Career Center, Libraries, and University Experiential Learning (EL).
• Lead and advance campus collaborations and initiatives related to student learning.
• Develop and advance strategic relationships with influential faculty and academic leaders, including leadership of the Student Affairs Academic Advisory Board.
• Connect faculty research and interests with Student Affairs learning opportunities.
• Serve as a campus expert on best practices and resources in Student Affairs and the effective design and facilitation of co-curricular learning.
• Promote efforts to bring together student learning across all aspects of the student experience.

Define and recommend opportunities for continuous improvement in Student Affairs (10%)
• Strategically analyze assessment data to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, at the Student Affairs, department, and individual experience levels.
• Pursue recommendations and potential action steps to address findings.
• Advise and collaborate broadly with the Chief of Staff and other senior leaders to consider available opportunities.
• Work with determined stakeholders to implement identified improvement efforts.

Partner in collaborative efforts on strategic priorities across Student Affairs (10%)
• Collaborate with functional leads in the Office of the Vice President (Data, Digital Engagement, Staff Development et al.) to integrate student and staff learning and other efforts.
• Serve on the Student Affairs Leadership Team.
• Advance key initiatives in the Student Affairs strategic plan, serving as the initiative lead for Essential Skills.
• Advance and promote Student Affairs’ academic, learning, and essential skills development efforts through dedicated outreach and pursuit of appropriate awards and recognition.
• Serve on campus committees, engage in meetings, and complete other duties as needed, in keeping with the responsibilities of the position.
