Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Nurse Practitioner will provide medical cross-coverage for the Director during research studies at CARI and on the Clinical Research Services Unit by performing medical assessments including collecting medical histories and performing physical examinations for potential study participants. Through these exams, the NP will be able to evaluate the overall health of the participants to then determine their eligibility to participate in various clinical trials that are being conducted by the CCTR and IDAS . The NP will be responsible for understanding and communicating clinical trial inclusion/exclusion criteria specific to each study to ensure the safety of the participants and protect the validity, scientific significance and rigor of the studies themselves. Results will be reported directly to the Director of IDAS / CCTR, study coordinators, and/or other applicable PIs/study personnel. This position will also enhance collaboration with the Emergency Medicine Department (ED) at VCUHS, which would include research activities in the ED related to opioid overdose clinical research project.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Master’s degree, post-master’s certificate or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited program. Required licensing and/or certification from the Virginia Board of Nursing or other applicable organization. Licensed nurse practitioner – FNP or ACNP . Ability to assess urgent clinical needs and triage patients appropriately. Knowledge and experience with human research subject protection and HIPAA, including CITI certification (or equivalent). Experience and understanding of clinical trial development, methodology, and conduct. Ability to read study protocols and comprehend and communicate inclusion and exclusion criteria. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. High level organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work and problem solve independently within a team context. Ability to obtain medical history and perform physical examinations and medical screening in patients with addictions and neurobehavioral disorders.Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

Experience in coordinating patient care for complex patients and with collaborative care. Experience working with interdisciplinary teams. Documented history of working with patients with addictions. Familiarity with clinical research. Track record of work in emergency room environment. Experience in clinical research with a diverse patient population. Training and work history in general medical environment. Expertise evaluating ECGs and training in basic life support.
