The Partnership for People with Disabilities (School of Education) at Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia’s university center for excellence in developmental disabilities, is seeking a dynamic candidate for the role of Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports ( VTSS ) Coach (part-time), funded by the Virginia Department of Education. In concert with states and territories implementing the multi-tiered systems of support, the VTSS aligns academics, behavior, and social-emotional wellness into a single decision-making framework to establish the supports needed for schools to be effective learning environments for all students. VTSS staff partner with school divisions throughout the Commonwealth to support the successful implementation of the framework. VTSS is a data-driven decision-making framework for establishing the academic, behavioral and social-emotional supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students. The VTSS systemic approach allows divisions, schools, and communities to provide multiple levels of supports to students in a more effective and efficient, clearly defined process.
• Providing support to VTSS cohort divisions and schools in the implementation of evidence-based literacy, mathematics, Response to Intervention (RtI) and/or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports ( PBIS )
• Working with VTSS and VDOE staff to develop and plan statewide and regional training sessions for VTSS cohort divisions and schools
• Making site visits to assigned VTSS cohort divisions and schools to provide onsite technical assistance to support the understanding and application of content acquired during training
• Consulting with VTSS cohort divisions and schools primarily in South West Virginia school divisions in the use of evidence-based practices that support student academic achievement, behavior and/or systems change, effective use of data-based decision-making, and establishing necessary system supports
• Traveling to assigned school divisions a minimum of once a month and contacts school divisions via telephone/e-mail a minimum of twice a month and keeping an accurate record of all training and technical assistance provided to cohort school divisions and schools
• Creating written documents and manuals to facilitate VTSS work

The VTSS Systems Coach will assist cohort divisions in VTSS implementation by:
• Involving and communicating with VTSS leadership to promote and ensure VTSS support and leadership at the central office level
• Supporting data-informed decisions throughout all three tiers of the VTSS framework
• Facilitating the use of fidelity measures and other evaluation tools at all levels to guide implementation efforts
• Reinforcing VTSS common vocabulary, background knowledge and experience, and importance of building collaborative partnerships
• Building collaborative partnerships with cohort division’s administration and staff

The VTSS Systems Coach will assist school divisions and schools to examine the current organizational infrastructure and make adjustments that promote a sustainable system organized to support a three-tiered framework at all levels by:
• Approaching the coach – school division relationship with mutual respect and positive relationship-building skills
• Using organizational processes and facilitative skills to help school divisions successfully navigate through the stages of implementation as described by the National Implementation Research Network ( NIRN )

Other responsibilities:
• Consulting with VTSS cohort divisions and schools in the use of evidence-based practices that support student academic achievement, behavior and/or systems change, effective use of data-based decision-making, and establishing necessary system supports
• Learning and communicating the VTSS process to schools, school divisions and their staff, including program evaluation protocols
• Providing service to school divisions, schools, and school-based personnel through on-going technical assistance, coaching and mentoring
• Providing service to Partnership, SOE on committees and work groups as requested
• Providing service to VDOE and other state partners as requested
• Travel and onsite meetings will be conducted according to the VCU and VDOE guidelines on health safety due to the pandemic
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Current or past qualifying Postgraduate Teaching, Pupil Personnel or Professional License with endorsements in special education, educational leadership, school psychology, school counseling, or school social work
• An advanced degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Mental Health, or related field
• Experience in providing technical assistance, mentoring and/or professional coaching for education professionals
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in coaching educational professionals is preferred
• Prior training in VTSS, PBIS and/or RtI
• Residence in South West Virginia
