The University of Chicago seeks an innovative and proven leader to serve as the next Dean of the Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. The purpose of the Graham School is to make the University’s educational resources accessible to broad and varied audiences through its programmatic offerings. Thus, the University of Chicago is looking for a visionary and energetic leader to significantly expand and enhance Graham’s current educational offerings – focused on degree and non-degree programs in the liberal arts – and reach new students through innovative program development across fields.

The University of Chicago

The University of Chicago is an urban research university that has driven new ways of thinking since 1890. The University of Chicago is guided by the firm belief that both a transformative education and field-defining research are best fostered in an environment that values rigorous inquiry and open debate. Excellence is pursued across all disciplines and all modes of inquiry, resulting in the University being home to world-leading scholars from astrophysics to music. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), the University of Chicago is ranked sixth as a national university by U.S. News and World Report for 2021. The University of Chicago has several top ten programs and highly ranked business (#3) and law (#4) schools that are renowned across the U.S. The University of Chicago offers many degree and academic programs in its undergraduate college, four divisions and seven professional schools for graduate study, and the Graham School for Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. The University’s commitment to free and open inquiry draws inspired scholars to campus, where ideas are born that challenge and change the world. The University of Chicago is driven to dig deeper, push further, and ask bigger questions—and to leverage knowledge to enrich all human life.

The Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies

The Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies (Graham), originally known as the “University Extension,” was established as one of the University's three original divisions to provide continuing education services. It is dedicated to disseminating the University’s commitment to scholarship to a wide audience of curious, engaged students. The Graham School serves as the “front door” of the University and helps bring the University of Chicago to a wider world of curious, continuous learners and enrolls approximately 800 students annually. Current programs and offerings in the Liberal Arts include a Master of Liberal Arts program, the Basic Program of Liberal Education for Adults (a four-year certificate program), a Graduate Certificate in Ethics and Leadership, as well as a Fortnight in Oxford study-abroad program and an open-enrollment writer’s program.

The Graham School is keenly focused on its mission to bring the University's intellectual resources and distinctive scholarly approach to a broader audience. The University of Chicago’s Graham School seeks a high-energy, visionary leader adept at balancing the traditional mores of academia with a deep appreciation and knowledge of how to engage broad, diverse audiences. The Dean will provide intellectual leadership to the Graham School, fostering an environment for innovation, intellectual stimulation, and a rich sense of community for all participants.

Reporting to the Provost for all matters and working with the President and Alumni Relations and Development on fundraising, the next Dean will provide strategic direction and organizational leadership for Graham and serve as a member of the University’s leadership team. In fulfilling these essential roles, the Dean will work closely with academic departments, fellow divisional and school Deans, Dean of the College, and University leadership to foster a collaborative intellectual environment, support faculty and students, bolster current programs, and conceive new initiatives.
