Houghton College invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment in the Department of Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering at the assistant or associate level starting in January or the Fall of 2021. Academic rank will be determined by previous experience.

The Computer Science program at Houghton College provides a balanced mixture of theory and practical application, as well as extensive collaborative research between faculty and students. The major in Data Science focuses on experiential learning that takes place in collaboration with Houghton’s Center for Data Science Analytics (CDSA).

Houghton College encourages faculty to pursue opportunities in their field, and provides incentives for external collaboration and outside consulting assignments that can benefit students. Startup funding and other support is available for faculty to develop innovative research and experiential learning programs with the Center for Data Science Analytics (CDSA). The Houghton Summer Research Institute (SRI) also provides support for faculty-student collaborative research each summer.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach a broad range of undergraduate data science and computer science courses, such as Data Science I and II, Programming I and II, Data Bases, Data Structures and Algorithms, Machine Learning, Big Data/Cloud Computing and Statistical Computing, including teaching both in person and online.

Qualifications: This position requires either a master’s degree (with significant experience) or a Ph. D. in computer science or related discipline with the background and preparation to teach the courses listed above.

Other important qualities for this position include a commitment to excellence and creativity in undergraduate teaching, strong interpersonal and leadership skills, a mature Christian faith and an ability to integrate Christian faith with their teaching.

Openness to teaching in the online environment is desired, and applications to teach in the program remotely will be considered.

Also required is ability to help students form respectful attitudes and interactions with people who differ in abilities, attitudes, and cultural experience, with sensitivity to factors that affect our own assessment of others.
