POSITION: Assistant Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies

Stetson University seeks candidates broadly trained in Sociology and Africana/African American/Black Studies for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. This position involves teaching in the Africana Studies Program and the Sociology and Anthropology Department. Some desirable areas of expertise include (but are not limited to): a concentration or extensive work in the history and cultures of the African Diaspora; critical race studies; environmental racism; Black feminisms; critical criminology; and urban sociology. The ideal candidate is a teacher-scholar dedicated to modeling scholarship in the disciplines of African/African American/Black Studies and Sociology for undergraduate students, who engages students from diverse backgrounds, and who extends the diversity of their expertise into the community.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in Sociology or Africana/African American/Black Studies in hand or expected before August 2021, with an active scholarly agenda commensurate with experience and demonstrated excellence teaching undergraduates in both general and specialized areas in the disciplines of Africana/African American/Black Studies and Sociology.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The teaching load is three courses per semester. Major responsibilities are expected to include regularly teaching Introduction to Africana Studies and contributing to one or more of the Sociology Department’s research sequence courses (e.g., social theory, research methods, statistics, and/or senior project). The position offers opportunities to develop and teach interdisciplinary and/or multidisciplinary courses including First-Year and Junior Seminars; courses cross-listed with Latin American/Latino Studies and other area studies programs; courses that might support interdisciplinary programs in Environmental Studies, Public Health, or Gender Studies; other courses that fulfill College of Arts and Sciences General Education requirements; or courses focusing on writing.

THE DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM:

The Sociology and Anthropology Department offers a major in Sociology and a minor in Anthropology. The Africana Studies Program offers a minor in Africana Studies.

 

THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES:

DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 32,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.

 

SALARY: Salary is competitive.
