Responsibilities:
Responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance,
performance, production support and documentation of various
departmental and enterprise-wide secure, HIPAA-compliant clinical
research data repositories, and clinical research-specific
datasets. Write complex stored procedures using Microsoft SQL
Server Management Studio. Use SQL Server Integration Services
(SSIS) to extract, transform, and load large sets of enterprise
data, and output data to other SQL Server databases. Identify and
implement a variety of approaches to data extraction, including
flat files, replication, change tracking, XML imports, etc. Use ETL
(extract, transform, and load) tools, data modeling, and data
integration techniques to solve complex technical problems,
including using advanced SQL Server programming techniques to
create and maintain several Common Data Model (CDM) repositories to
support School of Medicine collaborations with other academic
medical institutions and NIH-funded research. Using clinical
research methods/informatics and epidemiologic principles, prepare
datasets that account for missing data, skewed distributions, and
validate patient identity within an electronic medical record
system. Using HIPAA-compliant tools and methods, prepare datasets
that remove and reveal identifying patient clinical datasets. Using
functional specifications and designs, produce all or part of the
deliverables, including datasets containing Private Health
Information (PHI) for over 5 million patients. Maintain databases
and application system code. Collaborate with other engineers on
the Core for Clinical Research Data Acquisition (CCDA) team, as
well as the CCDA management staff, including the Medical
Director/Institutional Review Board (IRB) Honest Broker on
techniques for analyzing and accurately reporting clinical data,
including patient identity mapping across multiple systems. Follow
all applicable institutional policies and State and Federal
regulations for privacy, security, and the conduct of human subject
research to ensure secure data delivery. Provide monitoring and
guidance to more junior staff in application design, application
development, database administration best practices, and data
science tools and technologies. Perform other related duties as
assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science,
Information Science, Applied Health Sciences Informatics,
Information Technology, or a related field, and six (6) years of
experience with computer systems and applications, which must
include the following:
- Six (6) years of experience using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio to write complex stored procedures;
- Six (6) years of experience using SQL Server Integration Services to extract, transform, and load enterprise data, and output data to other SQL Server databases; and
- Two
(2) years of experience or completion of college level coursework
covering:
- Clinical research informatics;
- Epidemiologic principles; and
- Tools and methods to remove and reveal identifying patient clinical data under pertinent HIPAA rules and criteria.
OR
Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Information Science, Applied Health Sciences Informatics, Information Technology, or a related field, and four (4) years of work experience with computer systems and applications, which must include the following:
- Four (4) years of experience using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio to write complex stored procedures;
- Four (4) years of experience using SQL Server Integration Services to extract, transform, and load enterprise data, and output data to other SQL Server databases; and
- Two
(2) years of experience or completion of college level coursework
covering:
- Clinical research informatics;
- Epidemiologic principles; and
- Tools and methods to remove and reveal identifying patient clinical data under pertinent HIPAA rules and criteria.
Under either alternative, all experience may be concurrent and may
have been gained before, during, or after the qualifying
degree.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
