Purpose of Position

The Office of Legal Affairs represents Northern Kentucky University in litigation matters, administrative proceedings and significant commercial transactions in a manner that supports student success and the mission of the University. As we increase public engagement and are subjected to heightened scrutiny from multiple entities, the volume and complexity of legal issues continues to rise. Legal Affairs led the centralization of the university’s compliance efforts while managing complex litigation and day-to-day legal issues. Legal Affairs also manages NKU’s Enterprise Risk Management program. The Deputy General Counsel will lead these efforts with General Counsel support. This position will supervise a Staff Attorney and a law clerk so that the routine, low risk matters, will continue to be handled in a timely fashion while allowing the General Counsel and Deputy GC to focus on high risk and institutional matters.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead Compliance and Enterprise Risk Management
Supervise Staff Attorney and Legal Intern
Provide legal advice in response to inquiries from faculty and staff
Respond to complaints, subpoenas or other legal action taken against NKU
Participate in meetings involving legal issues of the university
Write, review, and revise university policies and procedures
Respond to Open Records/Meetings requests and appeals
Research and draft memorandum on legal issues

Qualifications

Juris Doctorate from accredited law school and admission to the Kentucky Bar.
Experience working in higher education preferred.
Experience with compliance or Enterprise Risk Management preferred. 
Technical skills sufficient to comply with the requirement of E-discovery document production
Legal research and writing;
Mediation and/or litigation experience
