Position Summary

This new UGA Extension faculty role will work closely with southeast Georgia growers. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with commodity-oriented teams of research and Extension scientists and will be expected to develop and lead a nationally recognized Extension and applied research program on agronomics and production in the Southeast District. Extension responsibilities will focus on developing educational materials and programs for County Extension Agents, growers, and other agribusinesses. The applied research program will focus on addressing relevant and practical issues facing Georgia’s row crop industry.

Additional Requirements

Master’s degree in Plant & Soil Sciences, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Natural Resources or related field

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

-Working knowledge of commercial agronomic crop production
-Competencies in conducting field demonstration trials and interpreting and applying research information
-Ability to organize and carry out activities and support educational programming
-Demonstrated communication ability
-Skills in leadership and management
-Ability to design, coordinate, and teach educational programs to meet community needs
-Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and engage with groups and committees
-Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
-Ability to speak to/teach large groups of residents
-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county, district, and state staff, local government employees, and clientele
-Ability to show high standards of professionalism in personal contacts, appearance, and work habits
-Ability to express thoughts clearly and concisely through written and verbal communication

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Provide programming for County Extension Agents and commercial clients on issues related to agronomic crop production (additional audiences include other public agencies, commodity and conservation groups, community and business leaders, volunteers, youth, and elected officials). Respond to client needs in counties posing vacant Cooperative Extension Agent positions.

Percentage Of Time 40 Duties/Responsibilities

Develop a comprehensive plan of work based on agronomic needs and issues affecting Southeast District.

Percentage Of Time 5 Duties/Responsibilities

Lead and cooperate on applied research and demonstrations with Agents and Specialists faculty at the Midville Research & Education Center, Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center, and on-farm trials.

Percentage Of Time 35 Duties/Responsibilities

Utilize the expertise and work closely with advisory groups, community leaders, public officials, and representatives of intended audiences to analyze data, identify needs, and assist in developing educational programs.

Participate in partnerships and facilitate partnership development with other state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, and other institutions.

Work with State Specialists to develop and implement training opportunities for County Extension Agents in the areas of agronomic crop production, processing, and marketing. Facilitate and participate in grant writing and other extramural funding development efforts to support programs.
